what number of ranks have your SO-RDIMMs ? the CPU must support RDIMM to not just the motherboard.
ranks are created if the CPU does not support 8GB per module i.e. they build a module 2Ranks 4GB each then.
keep in mind: if you have a DDR3 16GB with 2 ranks, each rank will have 8GB. this will not work on all Intel CPU.
