Not sure yet, I have a month to research/decide. Current contenders are the
Supermicro H13SAE-MF for more ports/slots, or the Asrock Rack B650D4U for cheapness.

I’m so torn on continuing to buy Supermicro because I love their hardware and they’ve been amazing to me for support, but I hate how inaccessible ipmi iso mounting is now.

Have you researched ATX or ATX-E motherboards for this chip.

For me, I have supermicro servers, but for the 64 core Epyc Milan, I went with gigabyte MZ32-AR0 because I could go back and forth for the first three generations of Epyc chips. For my Xeon SPR-SP 56 core, I accidentally built a system, because I bought ASUS Pro WS W790E-SAGE SE to resell, and then discovered I could get the ES chip for cheap.

I'm behind on the latest motherboards, is it 'inaccessible' or is the functionality behind a paywall now?
It’s a $180 license. I’m willing to buy licenses for stuff but that’s just too much for mounting an iso for me.

You used to be able to use the Java kvm to do it for free. And I’ve just never gotten the smb mounting to work. ‍♀

So it’s inaccessible to me, but it is theoretically supported.

Does the Java KVM not work for that anymore? I'm curious since my newest SM boards are X11.

None of the Mac clients support kvm (the rest of the Java client seems to work), so I didn’t even get to testing iso mounting through it.

I could have tested on Windows but I was already an hour into a disaster recovery situation and I just got fed up. I switched strategies and ran nixos-infect on the proxmox host.

I'll probably be making a fuller thread about it shortly, but I don't suppose there's any board manufacturers who've spoken up on enabling any of their consumer kit to work with the Epyc 4000 series, and as such it's going to be tied to server-lite boards only? The 4545P looks to be a darling of an SKU (and I'm hoping to see reviews of it soon) and would potentially be a perfect fit for a build I'm planning.

Incidentally I was highly tempted to get an H13SAE-MF but the IPMI paywall was a serious drawback and I had no idea it was even as petty as being required for virtual media. Blech. Will have to wait and see if the better-arranged-than-the-B650D4U-I-think B650D4U3 makes it over to these shores.

BTW, the Supermicro Java KVM does not need a license to use virtual media. Only when trying to mount virtual media via HTML5 console requires the license.

ASRockRack is a lot more unreliable than Supermicro. I don't recommend AsRockRack unless it's your last option, you can look online about the amount of issues they have with their B650 server boards.

Sure but the ancient Java KVM software just gets harder to run every year. You need to have a Windows machine handy. And it has to have access to the IPMI vlan-or-whatever of your server. And I always have trouble figuring out what increasingly-ancient jvm to install.

The fact that the paywall is enough to put me off, and running a shitty java util as a workaround isn't any consolation. SM kit is also increasingly hard to get hold of here.

Out of all the boards I'm running I haven't had any major issues with ASRR or Supermicro. I did have an ASRR that needed a tweak to change the MAC of the IPMI LAN, and I've got a Supermicro that refuses to boot with any BIOS after a certain point. Other than that they all run OK.

I've not been in the market for a board for Zen 5 at all until now, so can't say I'm aware of any particular issues with ASRR or others, but a link or two would be handy; generally I find if you chuck "$brand problems" in to your search engine du jour you'll find enough dirt - correct or otherwise - on absolutely everyone to justify never buying anything ever again.

do you remember we can make our own license for the IPMI BIOS update function ? needs the MAC and the OOB Private Key to calc.
on the site where this is described is also the HSDC Private Key, i thought with this the other license can be created too but not tested of course.

I could be wrong (don't have anything newer than an X10 to try on) but didn't they put a stop to the DIY licence key on one of the newer generations?

IIRC the original method was discovered when Peter Kleisner (?) took the IPMI apart and found the secret sauce embedded within the firmware - I assumed they'd found a more secure way of licence verification after that but I'd be happy to hear otherwise.

Since there’s a lot of (well-deserved and totally justified) negativity about the IPMI I’ll share my amazing support story to balance things out:

After attempting a heat sink mod my cpu throttled to -8hz. I admitted the botched self-service AND was out of warranty anyway and SM still diagnosed the problem and re-soldered the capacitor I partially dislodged, all for free. Saved me so much money restoring my $1k board.
