I might try one of those cards and see how the hashrate is. I didn't like the idea of OC cards but maybe its worth it if you don't have to BIOS mod. Maybe that's a new thread?

@Patrick what % of XMR market is STH now?

I'm not overclocking my RX 480's just using the tighter memory timing specs from the 1500mhz to the 1750 mhz speed, all the clocks stay the same.

Isn't that hard in Linux?

BTW has anyone tried GTX 1070's after the price drop? $334 new Amazon.com: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB GDDR5 256 bit PCI-E 3.0 x 16 Windforce OC (GV-N1070WF2OC-8GD): Computers & Accessories

That's a bigger GPU than the AMD. Maybe they're good for another crypto?

I modded the bios on my RX480's in Windows 10 and then rebooted to Ubuntu 16.04.

There is a AMD program that lets you flash the bios in linux but to edit the bios in Linux you would have to use a hex editor.

There are only a few things that are worth mining with Nvidia cards.

My GTX 970 does ~225 H/s but my RX480's do 625 H/s each even tho the GTX 970 performs a little less on average in games.

Its much more profitable mining Monero with AMD cards.

Maybe this is a new thread???

@Klee any pointers on what mines OK on Nvidia? I see buying RX580 as monero mining only. Nvidia is ML too.

My "Magic" E5-2667 V3 ES cpu's LOL

I'm using all but two cores, those I have the gpu's affinity tied to them and also it lets me still use this pc every day.

Makes for a excellent miner/desktop going full throttle that I can still use everyday.

To see what I mean by Magic cpus, look at the lower right side of this screen shot and look at the core numbers in the output of lmsensors on these 8 core cpu's LOL

8 core cpu's with a massive 35 mb of L3 cache each because they are acully a high core count cpu's that have all but 8 cores deactivated.

Makes them excellent for cpu mining Monero, they were slow sellers on ebay until I posted about that then they sold out before I could buy any more.

I had to flash back to the original bios on my rx 480's, one was running at 89c and spitting out errors, the other was running almost as hot. Now back to 60c - 70c.

Played around with the video bios again using SRBPolaris V2.56 bios editor:

Copied strap 1500 to all upper memory timings
Set minimum fan PWM to 40%
Set the target temp to 65c

Results:

HASHRATE REPORT
| ID | 10s | 60s | 15m | ID | 10s | 60s | 15m |
| 0 | 626.9 | 621.7 | 627.0 | 1 | 629.8 | 629.2 | 629.2 |
-----------------------------------------------------
Totals: 1256.8 1251.0 1256.2 H/s
Highest: 1262.5 H/s

At temps of 64c - 65c per card.

Still want to play around some more with them.

Playing around with the bios again.

Underclocked the gpu clocks and overclocked the memory.

Gpu0 clocks: 1180 mhz
Mem: 2100 Mhz

Gpu1 clocks: 1100 mhz
Mem: 2000 mhz

Gpu 1 does not do quite as well as Gpu 0.

Runs about 64c - 65c.

Windows is much easier to play around with changing settings using MSI Afterburner then modding the bios then flashing the gpu's so i have the same settings in Linux.

Now i'll let it run overnight in Windows 10 to see how they do.

I'm having to lower the settings a bit , was not stable after about 3 or 4 hours.

I just put my RX 470 STRIX and RX 480 in the lab cleanup thread. Need to raise funds to get newer generation hardware. Such is the cycle.

I'm having to lower the settings a bit , was not stable after about 3 or 4 hours.
Ended up flashing one gpu with the 2nd modded bios so I could concentrate on one gpu .

Second gpu mods:
Copied strap 1500 to upper
Min PWM 40%
Target temp 65c
gpu default freq 1150 mhz
mem default freq 1950

Ran 12 hours stable at 660 H/s. So I'll flash the second gpu .

I was able to get up to 715H/s playing around with Afterburner but was not stable for more than an hour even tho it ran at 66c.

I am finding out that a heavily modded gpu bios with a usable/responsive desktop is really unworkable.

I tried last night:

Copied strap 1500 to upper
Min PWM 40%
max temp 95c
Target temp 70c
GPU Max freq 1310 mhz
gpu def freq 1100 mhz
mem def freq 2000 mhz
975mV VDDCI

Hashed along at ~665 H/s on both gpu's over night without any errors but it is just not usable as a desktop.

It would be ok for a dedicated mining pc but not on my main pc that I use.

It has a decent hash rate of ~620- 630 H/s with a completely responsive desktop.

Also a modded bios for mining sucks for gaming.

The low gpu speeds/ high memory speed that is good for mining really hurts the performance in most every thing else.

The XFX RX 480's have a dual bios switch so I can go back to the stock bios without flashing when I need to but I have decided that the next video card upgrade on this pc I'll leave the bios stock.
