Hello,

First would like to thanks this website and all the contributors of this superb topic! i didnt read all the pages yet but it's the only place I found on google with very useful informations.

I have a sleeping dual Xeon 2670 v1 and wanted to test CPU mining.

Configuration is:

2x 2670
64Gb ram
SSD
XMR Stak CPU
minerXMR - 200000 difficulty - port 3333
Windows 10


I got like 814 H/s. I think my config file isnt really good since I had a lot of problem making it but went from 200 to 814 and thanks to your forum it seems 814 is normal for a dual 2670.

But i wonder why i only use 50% of the CPU Power and half of the core? On task manager and other application i can see 50-55% CPU use. Is it normal?

814h/s is a bit low for E5-2670.
my 2660 got ~840H/s +- 5% with 20T. (XMRig)
try to set processor affinity manually on task manager.

Here are the stats on
2 x E5-2660 V2 in a P4000 chassis with Intel S2600CP2J & SSD. Idles ~110W vs ~270W with docker servethehome/monero_dwarfpool:latest.
I could disable 3 cores / each CPU, remove extra memory, H310 etc to bring the power draw down.

hi guys, i'm just starting on this and i've got a few questions.
1. what's the recommended miner? it seems wolf's miner is being used on some of the posts, is it still the best miner to use?
2. any difference on windows vs linux mining hash rate?
3. is baremetal mining more optimized than with vm? let's say if I have 4 socket, 20 core/cpu machine, i was wondering the performance difference of 80 cores baremetal vs let say 4 VM's running 20 cores each(or maybe 40 vcpus each with HT.

1) Is this a dedicated mining machine?
If the host is share with other tasks, using docker miner is good solution for "mining on demand".

2) Linux is better .

3) Can't tell you.
I do not have experience with 80 cores host.
I prefer running miner software on baremetal hosts, miner has direct access to cache.

Patrick will come along to share his experience with his monster machine.

If you have one machine, the stak-xmr miner is good. If you have many machines running Linux, Wolf's works well, scales to high-end machines, and is easy to automate. The biggest I have used with Wolf's now is over 200 threads.

Linux is better than Windows.

Bare metal is better than Linux.

My suggestion would be to optimize for whichever OS you plan to use long term.

Mining Monero on CPUs makes sense for burning excess power and being able to shut it off and shift to a normal workload quickly. Docker gives the performance of bare metal on Linux but allows for great features like pause/ unpause and being able to restart.

For the price of one gtx 1070 I can almost get two gtx 1060. Wouldnt getting two gtx 1060 generates higher hashrate than one gtx 1070?

yes, which is why the 1070 has gone up massively in price and no stock. There are deals for 20x 1060 cards but I'd imagine at the current rate, they will be hard to source soon.

2x E5645 getting just over 365-380H/s, 4 nodes of this is about 806-820W draw from dual PSU's.
Given that the servers sit idle most of the time, might as well do something with them.

When you say VMs, I think VMware. I'm not sure how the other OS's do virtualization, but I can tell you that with VMware, smaller is better for core count. You'd have better overall performance running 40 VMs with 2 cores than 4 VMs with 20 cores. This is just because VMware wont release resources until all the requested resources are available.

E.g. if there is even a small VMWare process running for a fraction of a second on 1 core, it could delay resources for an entire 20 core VM. Where otherwise, it would only interrupt essentially 2 cores' worth of VM for performance. So, you won't be mining on one VM in that example losing 20 cores, instead of not mining on a VM losing 2 cores (and still having 18 going).

I think Hyper-V is similar, but I really don't know beyond that.

Here are the stats on 1 x E5-4650 V3 QS, running 15 threads in STH docker dwarfpool XMR image
The power draw - ~130W mining vs 70W idle. I've set the active cores - 9 in BIOS

Is this inline for this CPU?

I do not own a E5-4650 v3.

The closest CPU to E5-4650 v3 that I have mining is E5-2650L v3 production CPU.

E5-2650L v3 has L3 30MB (15 threads), base clock 1.8ghz , turbo is 2.5ghz.
Using xmr-stak-cpu with Ubuntu 16.0.4 mining with minexmr.com , hashrate is 485 H/s
