PS same speed drop again in 7 hours

I have just had my shipping info for a bare bones i5. One quick question if no one minds... I will need to use 1 x sfp to rj45 module for isp hand off. Are the sfp ports locked vendor wise? Thanks

Whatever i used as matter FC tranceivers or DAC's, no matter the brand, they worked fine but i haven't tested any RJ45 module, even though i don't see why it will not work. Just dont buy any cheepo chinese thing... i normaly buy from FS.com or HPE branded or Unifi Dac's & Tranceivers.

I got it to work with an M2 A+E to B+M riser and the Dual Edge TPU Adapter:

It's a bit jank, but 3d printed a bit of an adapter to prevent it from flopping around in the space that would otherwise be occupied by an U2.

Code:
5d:00.0 System peripheral: Global Unichip Corp. Coral Edge TPU
5e:00.0 System peripheral: Global Unichip Corp. Coral Edge TPU
Hello,

I am not sure to understand clearly.
Could you tell us exactly what hardware you ordered and in which slot you put in within the MS01 ?

I started with a 10GTek RJ45 transceiver from a local supplier, which worked fine, but I've since bought several of the cheapest AliExpress DACs and RJ45 transceivers which also work perfectly well. So I'm voting for cheepo Chinese SFP+ things to go with your cheepo Chinese PC.

Thanks. I have 2 spare 10gtek rj45's so this sounds ideal hopefully..

I am also voting for cheapo Chinese SFP I use G10TEK as well, and for short run those are not even active so hard to expect compatibility issue.

Since I am cheap, I am planing to order a Fanxiang SSD M.2 4TB NVMe 2280 PCIe Gen4 they are incredibly good for the price!

I plan to order a 4TB soon, I will report if there's any sizing issue, but based on what I am reading they are single sided.
Only point to keep in mind is that those do not support LUKS encryption (at least the 1 TB I have tried)

Hi - do you have a recommendation for cheap Chinese SFP+???? I've been looking at the Wiitek RJ45 SFP+ reviewed on this site. Still $36 per pop!

Going to Aliexpress is a nightmare for me to perform a search. Usually a splash page of everything all at once. Any help will be appreciated.

I also need optical transceivers - again any recommendations for cheap?

EDIT; Just did a search. I found this:

$17 per. So yeah a savings of 50% off compared to Wiitek.

I've seen eBay listing on Cheap Deals on STH.

I got this thing: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006957238570.html

It is very hot, the connection starts cutting out unless I point a fan directly at it.

I would recommend using SFP+ at both ends if you can, unless you only plan to only connect temporarily for specific tasks.

I've ordered one of these so I can go SFP+ to SFP+ from my MS-01 and RJ45 to RJ45 from my desk: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006222506874.html

It has an internal heatsink on the 10Gb RJ45 so hopefully it'll be okay.

--------

Heat has been a bit of an issue for me because I'm allergic to noise. It's mostly the NVMe fan on the bottom. It sounds like a mosquito and I can hear it through the cupboard door.

I've removed the NVMe fan now and put heatsinks on my drives. The whole unit is sitting on a 140mm Noctua fan on a ventilated rack shelf, so it can draw air in from underneath. It's actually running cooler now.

Someone on Reddit made and shared this 3D model of a bottom plate that fits a 140mm fan. I'm getting one printed so I can connect the fan permanently: Printables

I've also ordered some PTM7950. Saw some improvement with new paste but not as much as I'd like. I've reduced the CPU voltage for now and getting a nice idle:

Code:
Package id 0: +43.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0: +41.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 4: +42.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 8: +42.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 12: +43.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 16: +39.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 17: +39.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 18: +39.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 19: +39.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 20: +39.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 21: +39.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 22: +39.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 23: +39.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Would love to see Minisforum do one of these with the new Intel Ultra CPUs

-----------------

Update, the PTM7950 came from Amazon next day. It is miracle stuff. I couldn't get the CPU past 70˚ stress testing.

I've increased the fan activation temperatures and put the voltage up to 70 watts and 90 watts

Idle temp is lower now. The machine is quieter and faster. So I'm very pleased with that result.

Code:
Package id 0: +39.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0: +37.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 4: +37.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 8: +38.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 12: +38.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 16: +36.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 17: +36.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 18: +36.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 19: +36.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 20: +35.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 21: +35.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 22: +35.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 23: +35.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
I did notice that the external ventilation fills it with dust so I'll probably get a dust filter. That said, I'd be quite happy to give it some compressed air every week or so

--------

Update 2: Seems like it's actually cooling down as it settles rather than heating up

Code:
Adapter: ISA adapter
Package id 0: +36.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0: +35.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 4: +34.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 8: +35.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 12: +35.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 16: +34.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 17: +34.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 18: +34.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 19: +34.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 20: +34.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 21: +34.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 22: +34.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 23: +34.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

Hi.

I'm looking for uk buyers..
I see the uk website for miniforum states
"3)Regarding taxation, for the UK market, the prices we sell include customs duties and value-added tax (VAT), and no additional taxes are required from customers"..

Hmm well I just had to pay FedEx £101.48 for import duties to the uk.

Any other uk buyers had this issue?

Thanks

I can get my eGPU to work (razer chroma core x), but there is no video output from the eGPU until I login to windows. This means I have to connect an HDMI cable to login and then I can see the output on the eGPU, which is a real pain. I can't find any settings in ether Windows 11 or the BIOS to disable thunderbolt security or authorise the eGPU, which I suspect is the problem. How did you get round this? The legacy Thunderbolt security settings are nowhere to be found.

I decided to get these:

I will run my new ugreen NAS in Link Aggregation using RJ45 + Two (single) RJ45 for my Computer. I purchased this for my MS-01:

QNTY 2 for Link Aggregation. I purchased this from Amazon (30 port shown I purchased 22 port. I guess it is no longer available):

I'm fine with hacking up the switch to get better cooling if necessary.

So I figured out my own problem. If it helps anyone, the version of the NVidia driver that Microsoft Windows 11 installs automatically is very old (4xx vs 5xx) and this driver has a feature (bug?) that means a thunderbolt GPU will only display a black screen pre-login. As you can't login on an entirely black screen, these drivers are pointless unless you also have a screen hooked up to the integrated GPU aswell.

The solution is to install the latest Nvidia drivers, 555.99 at time if writing, an then it works fine. The drivers initialise with Windows, upon boot.

The intel drivers included in the Minisforum driver pack for the MS-01 are also very old - new drivers for all the intel NICs are in this driver pack: Intel® Ethernet Adapter Complete Driver Pack

to try and go for a NAS-alike kind of solution using the PCI slot, would these work?

No, you need cards that have plx chip on them for multiplexing because the cpu in MS-01 doesnt support bifurcation, so you need cards like this ones here

2 slot
4 slot

The heat on the card itself is tremendous and count also the heat of 4 NVME's, so its a no go solution. We all go to external enclosures for extra disks if the 3 nvme slots in the machine are not enouph.

I got the 2 slot variant in my MS-01 where i have in the 1st slot an m2 X4 to Egpu x16 enclosure with power suppply (i have an NVIDIA 1070ti in there) and a M.2 Usb3 controller with renesas chipset.
