They only make sense if there are shortages of real, full-function graphics cards. The point is that you are essentially buying yourself more time by not waiting for normal graphics cards to be in stock. The quicker you can throw hashrate at some coin out there, the better chance you have at meeting/exceeding your ROI while the difficulty is still low.

Agreed... Nvidia next gen cards should be coming out this year. Add a potential slump or even a full on crash in crypto, which seems overdue at this point, and those gtx 980s and R9 290s will be selling sub $100.

So I've finally figured out installation steps and took detailed notes for mining Zcash on Ubuntu 16.04 Server. Would anyone be interested if I posted my install/run scripts on Github?

Sure - but why didn't you use Patricks nvidia docker image for zcash - its a one line command that requires no installs or configuration?

The configuration is required to enable overclocking and fan control. That happens at OS level and requires running a dummy X server to enable nvidia-settings commands to work. Also "no installs or configuration" isn't quite accurate. GPU drivers and CUDA are installed at the OS level.

I am in fact using that very docker image too, though for some reason my 1050Ti isn't joining the party. Two 1060s and a 1080Ti work fine in the same machine. Eventual plan is to run this image with a single 1050/1050Ti per machine (SM dual node 2u chassis).

I got almost new (Amazon WH deals) Asus 6g OC ROG version last year for about $240. I bought it mainly for getting my self upto speed on ML/DL.

My thoughts now is that the best way to play this is sell GPUs right now and wait to re-buy when prices fall. I suspect the lower cryptocoin prices will be here to stay for awhile (maybe another 20% lower from here), then video card availability will return.

    1 x GTX 1080ti $749.99 + TAX
    2 x GTX 1080 $510.78 each + TAX
