tbh, we also should be able to ask pio? They tested the boards and advertised them as 7003 Milan boards.
Maybe they got a different bios at hands?
I think we should try. They should be able to name the CPU models they removed, right?

So, to get 12v out of the PSU, I believe we'd need to:
Pull pin A1 (LR_SELECT) - HIGH, I believe 3.3v, could be 5v though
Pull pins A3 (analog ground), C2 (blade enable), D1 (PSKILL) - LOW (GND)
You could also pull C1 (Blade throttle) high, but I believe there's an existing pull-up in place

Please double check my work and stay safe if anyone tries this. Remember that power electronics can be very very dangerous!

(I edited since I had a bad guess regarding LR_SELECT earlier, sorry!)
Yes this works I think for me PSKILL was the issue it had a level of 2.5V so asserted when not pulled down.
What I did was pulling following pins to GND:
  • A3 (analog ground)
  • C2 (blade enable)
  • D1 PSKILL (the short pin the top left corner)
-> Server is powered on currently I have a Rome CPU installed and I am not able to get a picture from graphics card installed in slot #3 (probably it is not supported in Bios from report by others)
Will now check further

the BIOS is one gen only. so IF it suports 7003, then Milan only.
but i guess you have Naples BIOS in it.

Any relevant errors via LEDs/BMC?
  • Power supply LED is blinking yellow/green -> One of two AC Feeds has failed: Yellow-Green-Yellow Continuous at 2Hz _ to be expected there is only one of the feeds connected
  • Alert_L led is lit (red) -> Indicates errors occur on the motherboard according to "Project OlympusAMD EPYC™ Processor Motherboard Specification" might be just the not recognised processor (Rome)
  • POST code LEDs are fixed at 0x0F I think (0-3 red 4-7 green)
  • access to BMC via IPMI tools shows same/similar results are reported before
  • Most of the CPU sensors are not shown in the BMC (even when powered on) I seems the CPU (Rome) is doing nothing except heating up a little

Sharing some theories based on some OSINT research. It's all very circumstantial and I'd love to be wrong.

I think these are indeed first Gen (Naples) nodes that had EPYC 7551 procs (180w) and were available on Azure as Lsv2 VMs.
This SKU is not retired, but has been announced as deprecated recently.

The Azure SKUs for 7452 and 7763v don't appear on the list of retired/deprecated SKUs AFAIK.

I cant imagine why pio would get confused. This seems very wrong.
But I still wish there is a magic BIOS waiting on one of our nodes to unlock Milan compatibility....

I reached out to Pioslap via eBay.
Initial response was quick, but uninformative ("this information can be found in the open compute documentation").
I persisted, but got no further reply / info yet.

I think it might actually help if they get similar questions / issues coming from multiple people. They'll understand there may be an actual issue...

the open compute model does not support 7003, only 7001.
same with the dual intel LGA3647, the second version(MS only) with 2nd gen Scalable support is confidential (you need MS NDA)

I think we were all hoping these were some new variant based on the listing. Sadly that's likely not the case...
I just wish the listing wasn't so assertive about Milan support...

not Milan, just 7003, and if one don't know what that means...
Please pardon my ignorance. I could be missing your point entirely...

Other than Milan, Milan-X and EPYC embedded 7003, the only other thing I know of that could be called EPYC 7003 is possibly the Milan cloud SKUs like 7v13 and 7b13, but I think their TDP was supposed to be out of the question for the platform (2x 180w max AFAIK)

I assume I'm missing your point, sorry. Mind pointing me in the right direction?

I think they just updated the listings to refer to EPYC 7001.
Now to decide if I want to return it or not...
For an EPYC 7001 to be honest it seems overpriced. I would just return it asking the Seller to pay for Return Shipping. No matter what they say (like "you should have done your own Research beforehand" etc), THEY messed up !

Granted I and many other People had a HUGE Deal on the HYVE EDGE Server, which I got for around 135 EUR / Piece delivered and imported to Denmark (including VAT !), which includes an EPYC 7642 Processor which has a CPUBenchmark Score of around 58000 (at an eBay Value of around 300 EUR alone) !

Sure you could get some 7601 / 7551 for around 50 EUR each (assuming the BIOS is compatible). The 7551P is probably NOT relevant for you since intended for single Socket systems though:

Granted the HYVE also has its downsides (impossible to update BIOS or BMC Firmware, Fans sound like Jet Engines for the first 2 Minutes until booted, after which it's OK if you limit the CPU Frequency using cpupower a bit, all while maintaining most of the Performance).

It was restocked once (and Seller wouldn't accept the same Price as last Time, although it was maybe around 180 EUR shipped last Time I tried) but it's a bit of a gamble to be honest. Don't count too much on a Restock though, as a Month or more passed between the first restock, and it was NOT a major restock either (30 Units or so went in around 1 Hour).

THAT was a great deal, this one here doesn't seem so much so anymore (the 7003 -> 7001 "minor" Update of the Listing by PIOsPartsLap basically changes everything IMHO).

At the End of the Day though it's your Choice. Right now, there don't seem to be many AMD EPYC Deals at all on eBay for complete Servers below 1000 EUR :( .
