If that 5100 3.84TB has no possibility of getting the right Firmware, would it be somehow possible to dump EEPROM / Flash using some I2C/SPI Programmer and periodically reset the Drive (including all the Smart Statistics) every 2 Years or so ?

Thanks for the info, my only concern is that my 1.6TB Micron Cisco 5200 MAX drives arent listed in the hetzner firmware package and use a different firmware number scheme... but I assume it should still work? I thought that that the 1.6TB micron Maxes were overprovisioned 1.92tb micron pros so in theory it should work?

Maybe I'll wait until I hit the 65k theshold to try it. Maybe Cisco releases something by then.

I've no experience with any of the cisco-branded micron drives, although I think some on this thread might be.

I'm not even sure at this point that there were different firmware streams for the ECO vs. MAX lines - as you say, TTBOMK the max series were just overprovisioned-out-of-the-box versions. Possibly model numbers might help - often vendors (like dell) will list those for a single firmware release. But as I don't have any of the max versions myself and all of the legit downloads have disappeared I can't say for sure.

Edit: Just took another peek in the firmware.properties file from Wallace's Hetzner pull and it explicitly references the MAX series for the <2TB models;
Code:
[D1MU040]
drive_model=5200ECO,5200PRO,5200MAX
firmware_type=MU
capacity=240,480,960,1920
display_version=D1MU040

Yeah but notice how there is nothing about capacity 1600G. its 960G then 1920G.

Imho different firmware train and drive will deny update. Updates likely in Cisco UCS HUU ISO like 6.0(2) or 4.3(6).

I checked a few Cisco releases the other day and didnt see anything new for the 5200 series, maybe in the next one?

Maybe it isn't there or maybe you missed it or maybe they are hush about it. Let me know if 2nd pair of eyes is wanted.

Sure if you wouldnt mind, I searched the web for D1MH041 which I assumed would be the successor to D1MH031. And then I logged into Ciscos support portal and checked a few server HUU which all still had the old D1MH031.

Well I guess that's where I'm at a loss as I've never had a MAX series, and a quick search doesn't show up any 5200 MAX with a 1600GB capacity, e.g. the SSD wiki only lists 240, 480, 960 and 1920GB variants. What firmware are yours currently running and have you upgraded them at all via the Micron firmware?

Previous versions of the firmware.properties file used by the Micron tooling has the same sort of thing, e.g. this one from the (last official) current 03 series for the 5200:
Code:
pkg_ver=2
[D1MU030]
drive_model=5200ECO,5200PRO,5200MAX
firmware_type=MU
capacity=240,480,960,1920
display_version=D1MU030
[D1MU430]
drive_model=5200ECO
firmware_type=MU
capacity=3840
display_version=D1MU430
[D1MU530]
drive_model=5200PRO
firmware_type=MU
capacity=3840
display_version=D1MU530
[D1MU830]
drive_model=5200ECO
firmware_type=MU
capacity=7680
display_version=D1MU830
Don't get me wrong, I'd be apprehensive as well and I'm not telling you it's definitely going to work. But if your existing MAX drives used the same firmwares as the ECO variants listed alongside them then it should be safe. But if yours is a special cisco one then possibly worth sticking to cisco firmware if you can get hold of it.

Model Number is MTFDDAK1T6TDN which is a pretty uncommon drive. I'm not sure why the Cisco team decided that they needed a 1.6T Max and couldn't just use the 1.92T Max? Sounds like additional work for little gain.

I upgraded them a few years back using msecli to the D1MH031 firmware package I got from the Cisco HUU (documented my journey here: https://forums.servethehome.com/ind...bcf-100-obo-w-free-shipping.38722/post-459315). I never tried using OEM Micron firmware since at the time I was able to get the Cisco firmware. I'll try forcing the OEM firmware when my drives hit the 65k bug (assuming theyre impacted).

Just under 12.5 days to go, as you can see the 4x0 firmware is already applied. Hopefully looking forward to a nothing-burger.

Looks like Cisco has published a notice about the bug, so positive news for us Cisco drive holders that updated firmware may be forthcoming?

Nothing-burger hopefully achieved. No signs of any IO problems yet, touch wood.

I just discover this topic. Is the Micron 5210 ION affected by this bug ? (I have a Micron 5210 ION 7,68 TB (MTFDDAK7T6QDE) with 52k hours)

By the way if someone has a hetzner account, has anyone tried to redownload the firmwares from the recovery partition? I remember that hetzner has 5100 (the guy said so on the reddit thread) and chances are they have some 5300 too. So perhaps they will have updated firmware for those models since Micron doesn't seem to be bothered to release them themselves.

So it seems Lenovo provides updates for various drives https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht512202
I found the package in https://datacentersupport.lenovo.co...ers/thinksystem/sr635/7y99/downloads/ds581601

but the question now is -
  1. can i flash the Lenoo FW onto my generic Micron drive?
  2. or can i extract the generic fw from the Lenovo binary to flash it (similar to what could be done with Dell FW)?

Anyone tried either of these?
Answer to 1.: most likely not

Answer to 2: You can extract the lenovo binary. Download the payload file. Using 7zip, unzip it. The firmwares are in the images/files folder. The mapping of which firmware for which drive is in the "flashdrv.bin" file (open it in notepad++). Just checked your link, the firmware for the 5300 hasn't been updated recently (as it says in the relase notes). You can use Lenovo's onecli to update the drive, even on non lenovo server (but probably only on lenovo drive though I haven't tried). But that's not a generic binary. Don't know if a generic binary can be extracted from the lenovo binary.

Well I need the 5100 3.84T and thats included, I even have a Lenovo server I could use but no Lenovo drives... but still one step close than no 3.84 fw at all;)
I still have time, my worst drive is at 52k hours
