Thanks Zac, I figured they'd be similar. I might try them though, offer $60 for 4 and see what happens. I'd use them in a zfs mirror anyways.

pickup 1 for $40. Crystal Disk reported 99% health. In operation for 4.8 yrs. 15TB writes, 150TB reads.
Would expect 4,5-5years on them and under 100tb write indeed.
Somebody has replaced a metric fkton of them somewhere, so many brokers with large quantities of them with pretty much identical health reports.

+1 on those 863's. Picked up a number of these and I can echo the ~5yr POH and <50TB written.

+20! They were all practically identical. Closer to 7 years POH though.

Im upgrading/expanding vSAN, hitting the ceiling of what my current 10gbe and drives can do.

Upgrading to 6hosts with
- 40gbe vSAN port
- 1.6tb P3605 pcie cards as caches
- 7x sm863a 960gb per host

I don't pay much attention to hours on an SSD if it has low writes. Unlike a spinning disk, I don't think there is anything to wear out in an SSD that is just being read.
Right, what's 50k hours when you've got 2 million hours MTTF...

Hi @Cruzader,

Care to share the health on the units that you have received?

Picking up first package of 25 today, will probably check numbers and see that all do normal speed tonight.
Looks like my 40gbe cards are ready for pickup also, so almost vSAN benching time :)

Unless you got the 25/40/50gbe and full nvme storage to jump on the express vSAN id not touch 8 yet.
Not before there is a stable release for both esxi8 and the integrating tools like veeam.

This weekend I got time to check a lot of drives I've bough in the past months.

I got two 480GB M510DC that were 0 hours and bought as "used" for $42 each. They don't appear to be OEM drives and have the latest firmware from Micron.

I got 3x 960GB 5200 Pro for $72 each, 100% health, 3k POH 400GB written, 7k POH 900GB written, 11k POH 5.8TB written. The housings have a nice blue finish, not that it matters but it's uncommon to see.

These have "D1RL004" firmware, the naming does not match retail drives and there are no OEM markings on them. Maybe the "D" means Dell? Can I use the firmware update file from Micron?

I also got 4x X300DC for $49 each, new. These seem low endurance (cannot find exact info, datasheet says 0.2 and 1.75 DWPD and the X300 non-DC is rated for 80TBW) but they were cheap enough to be used as external drives to move data around or in client machines.

I got more drives that I've not checked yet, but will do shortly.

Has anyone tried these 480GB 'bakers choice' from Unixsurplus? $19.00 before best offer.

Ordered one, it arrived today. Micron M500DC with over 56k power on hours, 11 power on count, and only 22TB written (see attachments).

I bought 4 of them. Got all micron. All 4 of them had pretty much the same power on counts and TB written, with just one exception.
1 of the drives only showed a bit over 500 hours powered on but same power on counts.
3 show 100% life left and 1 was 99%.
