The market is not that bad if you're looking for RDIMM. To learn, do not forget your PowerGEM and cable with NVDIMM-N.At current market rate yah not a bad choice, and we might even learn a thing or two.
I'm scared to even ask... But what kind of drive? All options are cursed.is presented to OS as a drive
SmartStore (Module) Technologies NVDIMM-N's don't have the 'power brick' with cable like AGIDA etc. They have the power-gem on the module itself and makes them powered by the ram slot itself. This is very convenient and preferable. However, the modules are even rarer and more expansive. Sure, sometimes here and there is a bundle on SALE like 200 US$ for 10x). NVDIMM-N's were never an issue except with Supermicro boards. All our AMD-boards (Gigabyte, TYAN, ASUS) ran NVDIMM-N out-of-the-box.Not entirely sure I understand the question but NVDimm-N need a power source (the PowerGem) to maintain their content when the server is not running.
NVDimms are treated differently than normal Dimms (basically "storage"-capable devices, depending on mode) so if all of the NVDimms are used as persistent memory you wouldn't have any memory.
However if you only have the module and no PowerGem they should act like regular DIMMs.
Havent tried with AMD though, maybe its different.
Edit:
NVDimm -N is not like NVDimm-P, its a special high performance persistent storage device for caching, eg ZFS (->https://forums.servethehome.com/ind...history-of-my-new-zfs-filer.28179/post-260089) , or in ESXi if you you're lucky (hw+fw need to be on compatibility list)
Hello, in your other posts I've heard about your ES powered optane build and i plan to do an extremely similair thing, as well as trying to use cheap nvdimms as dram for optane. Have you had sucess? Ive been thinking of modifying the SPD for the sticks so they look like normal RDIMM but i'd like to hear if it worked for you and if yes how well.I ordered 4 of these to see if they will work in a 3rd gen scalable Xeon as regular RDIMM. Figured they were a cheap way to upgrade my RAM speed if they did. I’ll post updates here when I get around to trying them.
maybe possible. but if you have issues nobody helps.I let experts comment whether it is even possible to have both NVDIMM-N and NVDIMM-P in the same system
A quick Google tells me it can boot with anywhere between 1: 4 and 1:16, 1:8 should be fine. For my project ill be using app direct so specifically to me it doesn't matter, but I just wanted to hear if that person found a workaround because as is nvdimms cant be with optane but I find no problem or potential bug with flashing the nvdimm SPD's to make them look like a normal rdimm to the bios, im wondering if thats possible. (Of course, I'll update the checksum)Er… I let experts comment whether it is even possible to have both NVDIMM-N and NVDIMM-P in the same system, but Optane DCPMM in Memory Mode needs RAM in 1:4 to 1:8 ratio, so "large" 16 GB NVDIMM-N would be barely enough to support the smallest 128 GB Optane.
