Create a bootstick with ESXi 8 installer and try
Gave it a try. It complained about my CPU, and the LSI SAS card.
CPU error can be overridden, not sure what the results will be though.

Upgrading now to 7 using esxcli while I'm at it.

No need to remove as the warning is only there prior setup.
After then ESXi 8 will simply work. Esxi 9 propably not.

ESXI 8 installer says CPU is deprecated
ESXI 7 installer says CPU will be deprecated in next version.

Either way I have to bypass since I doesnt like the LSI HBA.

Either way, updated to 7.03. Uses more RAM than 6.7, had to decrease guest RAM size.
Now need to move OmniOS from r151032 to latest stable while I'm at it.

Update: Weird.
After upgrading to 7.03 it didnt complain about the CPU anymore when trying to apply 8.0

Updated to r151044 without any issue.
It's just insane how smoothly these upgrades go on the aio, a few years of updates issued at once and the only hiccup was a certificate that had to be re-issued.

Certainly convinced me to stay with the aio and leave truenas be.

@gea Can Guest VM version be upgraded to ESXI 8.0 for OmniOS? Or should I leave at 6.5?
Thanks.

Either way, that was a slight upgrade detour, still need to decide if I should go the xeon route or AMD X470 route.

Does not matter for OmniOS. This is only related to newer ESXi features and backward compatibility of VMs with an older ESXi.

Jeez, Unbuffered Ecc ram is double the price of registered ecc, and 128gb is quite a bit.

Back to the drawing board.

Any idea if I can pass through the onchip SATA controller on an Epyc 7002 series SOC to Solaris using ESXI?

Maybe you want Radeon Graphics for whatever reason

Supports DDR4 288-pin ECC*/non-ECC UDIMM
*For AMD Ryzen Desktop Processors with Radeon Graphics, ECC support is only with Processors with PRO technologies.

I just looked around for affordable uATX boards with ECC, ipmi, 2xM2 and Intel nic.
Propably I would prefer https://www.asrockrack.com/general/productdetail.asp?Model=X570D4U#Specifications

with an AMD Ryzen 5000 Pro and ECC Ram
I initially ordered the ASROCK ROMED6U4-2L2T and was about to order an EPYC 7302.
Then I saw the idle power consumption hovers around 100W for similar systems, which is about 60W more than lower end systems, over the years it amounts for quite a bit, so cancelled the MB.

I then opted for the ASROCK Rack B550D4U. Pretty similar feature set to the X570, slightly cheaper. Added a Ryzen 5600.
I managed to find some decently priced DDR4 ECC UDIMMs, 30$ per 16GBm got 4 of them.

Now waiting for everything to arrive.
