MELLANOX HS-1235T INFINBAND 10Gb Dual Port PCI-E

Hi Guys and network experts,

I’m very new to networking and I’m looking into upgrading to 10gbe from server to server at home. I’m looking on eBay for a set of 2 cards and a cable that just works. While reading a lot and getting confused many times I’m stumbling about these cheaper cards a lot : Mellanox hs-1235t infinband 10gb Dual Port PCI-E Server MHRH 2a-xsr Adapterkarte | eBay I’m not familiar with Infiniti band protocol and therefore have to ask:

1. Why are these cards so cheap?
2. Do they work in a home environment to connect two Proxmox servers only?
3. What cable would be needed to connect them?

Any comment is much appreciated and will be helpful.

Hi, thank you for your reply. I'm confused as you are saying I need QSFP+ to SFP+ adapter for ethernet. Does this count if I want to connect two of these cards directly from server to server as well?

You can use a QSFP DAC between them if they will be direct connected, but you'll still only be at 10gbps on a first generation (ancient) mellanox card.

I would spend 10 more dollars and get 649281-B21 - they're two generations newer (connect X3), and will run at 40gbps ethernet. Just follow this to update the firmware: https://forums.servethehome.com/ind...net-dual-port-qsfp-adapter.20525/#post-198015
