I'm currently shopping for JBOD enclosure and these 2 seem to be about the same price.
What's the difference between those two and which should I go for? I plan to connect it with dell r240 server

There is no difference inside, only outside: SFF 6G connector or SFF 12G connector. Cause Storage controllers MD34/MD38 got 12G connectors.
But Chassis itself has 6G midplane so you won`t get more performance and MD12 and MD14 controllers can be replaced from one to another chassis without any problem.

ps this is not JBOD enclosure. You can use it as JBOD but can get some bugs. especialy with SATA-disks.

I plan to use it with SAS ssds, got a bunch of them almost for free. I have already installed HBA in my dell server(which works in it mode). How do I get full 12g speed with 1420 ? Is there mid plane that supports 12g and fits into 1420 case?

no, full 12G you can get only with new version of these models by Netapp NAJ-1501,NAJ-1502,NAJ-1503.

In this (MD14xx) model it`s just a type of connection, but not speed.
ps in 4U version of this chassis controllers have 6G connector. So there is no version of chassis itself that has 12G midplane.

But you get full performance of 6G ssd PX02/04/05 that can come with storage. (with E5600, each controllers provide upto 325k IOPS in average utilization)

If I'd go with Netapp NAJ-1501 - is there anything I should know about it? Like drives incompatibilities or something else? It will be hooked to dell r240 with HBA card. Also noise-wise how noisy is it? I want to put it in my closet. I read that you can set fan speed on Dells via serial port, how about Neaps?

in case of "JBOD" usage - the same behaviour: it works like a sas switch without restrtiction - only HBA card can add hdd incomptability.
in case of "Storage" with E2800/E5700 controllers branding is also can be removed from demands.

I don`t play with fan speed cause it just can degrade hdd.
Dell (MD12/MD14) it`s netapp, so probably this variant of fan speed still works.

Well yeah, thats kinda my usage will be. With ssd in mostly idle mode I don't think lowering fans will hurt it, but I'll keep an eye on temps for sure. Seems like MD1420 is better option for now

This is 100% incorrect. The MD1400 and MD1420 (and SC400 and SC420) are 12G SAS, both EMM/expander and backplane.
You are wrong!
Midplane in MD1200/1220 and MD1400/1420 are the same - 6G.
Cause this is Netapp E2600/E2700 series (Dell is used as OEM seller). Port SFF8644 on EMM don`t provide 12G for connection to disk cause this is role for midplane.

This is One model of chassis. Of course you can use EMM MD1200 and MD1400 in this chassis and have SFF8088 and SFF8644 ports like all show and no go.
