They get pretty warm when I had a F80 a year or two back, Linux driver support is std LSI MPT SAS so that's easy enough.

can these be used like a standard SSD?
Depends on what you mean by that. They do show up as four separate drives. Generally they can be used as a 'standard SSD' without any additional drivers etc, but I can't really speak for other OSes than Linux and Solaris on this front. Easier than something like Fusion-io for sure.

That thing sucks up some power at 11w idle and 25w usage. Are these good as l2arc for freenas?
I'd probably get something else for an L2ARC. You don't need the performance for that, and the fact that it has four separate disks isn't really doing it many favors. However the price is good for 400GB, can't really many better options for that little in that size range!

I've got a couple of these and they do get quite hot. They're not kidding about that power draw..

So in order to have an mdraid setup, we have the following options with 2 of F40s :
- create 2 mdraid0 using 4 visible SSDs for each and then create an mdraid 1 on top of it
- create mdraid10 using all of the 8 SSDs. (i'd prefer this, simpler)

Any other options if you don't want to use paritity mdraid?
