It seems it wasn't quite as good a deal as I thought at first glance, well now i'm less excited... :( sorry about that!

All these links are from the same vendor [MadePC] so I definitely wouldn't call it a bad deal. Once they sell out, the price will go up significantly.

These and the 9200-16e are identical controllers in a different form factor. I was buying these years ago on eaby for $40 shipped. There is little demand for external controllers.

I actually bought some of those @ $34 myself before I saw this thread. It was also suggested to me on Amazon and I thought: yep, I believe I need 3 of those.

Apparently I didn't do enough digging if they're coming up Amazon.com: LSI Logic Controller Card H5-25379-00 SAS 9201-16e 16Port 6Gb/s SATA+SAS PCI Express Single Electronic Consumer Electronics: Computers & Accessories @34 instead of 44 for the same 9201-16e. I'm glad it sparked some interest at least! I'm sure prices for cables will go up now that I told you guys the external controllers are cheap though XD

I wonder this should compatible with the 'HP SAS Expander' ?
Through in one of this card, one expander and one Norco 4220/4224, I'm should be good to go for my first JBOD DAS?

The answer is probably but without knowing the exact expander model it's just a guess. SAS is usually pretty plug and play(I've used hp expanders with lsi cards before) but there's always exceptions.

Haha. I've used this specific model for years. I only needed the half height cards with 8 ports, but at the time I bought my first ones well over a year ago the 16e's were literally half the price for double the ports. So I started just building JBOD chassis and using these cards instead.

I've still got tons of the 8088 external cables. It was one of those eBay deals a year ago that had way way cables than what I needed and thought maybe I should get a spare or two.. or twenty..

The cables i'm having a hard time settling on are the external<>internal ones. I'm torn between an adapter like this Amazon.com: CableDeconn Dual Mini SAS SFF-8088 To SAS36P SFF-8087 Adapter In PCI bracket: Computers & Accessories or just going with a cable back to the inside of the server like this one Amazon.com: CableCreation External Mini SAS 26pin (SFF-8088) Male to 4 x eSATA 7Pin Cable, 1.0M: Computers & Accessories

I can't speak to any differences, but I can vouch that the 40 dollar card works, I just powered mine up and it's working! setting up SSD+HDD tiered storage now

A little bit of reasearch once I installed the HBA, firmware may be the answer. The 40 dollar one I ordered showed up with a very old(0.9.00.06.00) firmware version. Although it did work out of the box I upgraded it to version 20 in MSM without any issue.

    Thanks for you update.

Seems like a really great deal if the only differences is the firmware.
