IIRC mobilenvidia had a forum post on the 9201-8i... the 9201 series is usually a 16 port.

I don't know off the top of my head what that chip is though.

I think you have a rebraned LSI 9211-8i (SAS2008 chip). I don't think you can update anything from LSI if this is a rebranded IBM. What you need to do is cross-flash this to LSI 9211-8i SBR & Firmware then it becomes LSI card.

Are you trying to use this as IT or IR mode?

LSI9211-8i

There looks to be a missing IC on the LSI9201-8i, not quite sure what it is
It can only the Firmware ROM or the NVRAM
NVRAM probably most likely, if it's IT only it won't need any to keep RAID setup data etc

IBM pretty well nearly always add their part numbers to their boards, even straight copies like the M5016/LSI9265

Added LSI SAS9201-8i to SAS2008 under LSI (as it's more LSI than IBM)
With possible outcome to lacking NVRAM, so no IR mode to store RAID/Drive data.

LSI9201-8i

Thank you all for the information.

The LSI9201-8i card works fine as an HBA (Linux v3.2 mdadm raid6). It is much better than the two Marvell 9230 x4 cards I was trying to use before. The Marvell cards kept throwing ata errors and crashing my mdadm array.

While I usually try to flash any new hardware to the latest version, I guess I should leave well enough alone. I had read in the sas2flash doco something about uploading a UEFI BIOS to replace the old style BIOS, maybe saving a few seconds on startup, but I will restrain myself lest I end up with an expensive piece of inert green plastic (again).

Thanks again,
Ben

You can flash the UEFI BIOS separately to the normal BIOS it can have both at once.

You can flash it via DOS or MSM or MegaCLi

UEFI BIOS = only in UEFI boot mode, or other wise a waste of flashing it.

Haven't gone through the whole thread again to check it is not already included but have just come across a handy RedBooks link for IBM branded SAS controllers here.

Anybody have any experience with the LSI 9205/9207? I just ordered one on Ebay for my FlexRAID rig.
