You are right, only the data currently in the cache will be lost. Read-only caches are exempt from these two downsides.
I'm currently running cachecade on two controllers in raid0+1, so four 240GB drives per controller (almost 512GB). Moving to 2TB would require 16 drives per controller, but in raid5 this would only require 10 drives. There would be just one parity drive per volume, but I'm ok with that because of the global hot spares in place.
