AFAIK the BPN-SAS2-846EL1 is a SAS expander. And AFAIK the 9650SE-12ML card only supports 12 devices(that I know of, I can't find any other info about how many actual devices can be supported through expanders in documentation, only that the card has "12 ports"). If I hook up this card to the Supermicro SC846 chassis with the SAS2 expander backplane will I be able to utilize all 24 drives in the front or will I need to get something like the IBM M1015 flashed to IT mode?

Thanks.

9650 only supports SATA devices. So that won't work.

9690 or newer is probably best; I think the 9750-4i or 9750-8i is what I'd go with, since it's newer.

I have a 9750-8i hooked up to an SC846 and I can connect all 24 devices.

Isn't that backplane a SAS or SATA backplane though? I'm not going to be putting SAS drives in my storage. Pretty sure it is according to the specs of the chassis product page.
