Broadcom LSI SAS 9400-16i (05-50008-00) 12Gb 16 Port HBA - New Sealed Box | eBay $250

Broadcom LSI SAS 9400-8e (05-50013-01) 12Gb 8 Port HBA - New Sealed Box | eBay $180

Broadcom LSI SAS 9300-16i (05-25600-00) 12Gb 16 Port HBA - New Sealed Box 830343003440 | eBay $290

I wished I had cash to spare...

They have plenty apparently , currently 9 left in first auction, I expect the price to rise if they sell quickly;)

Seller has sold computer items before but has been out for 6 months, so a potential risk of fraud exists - "Free overnight shipping" sounds a bit dubious in addition to the cheap price...

Its Paypal though...

Too bad Broadcom LSI SAS 9460-16i 4gb cache not available

One thing though, 94xx are x8 lane PCI Express® 3.1 not x16 Host PCIe (those end with 94xx w)

Can anyone point me in the direction of a comparison of the various chips? Not sure if any of those cards would be an upgrade compared to my SAS3008 :-/

Unless you're running a huge array of SSD, don't think it wouldn't be much of a difference.
Thanks, that's what I figured. Yet, it's somewhat baffling that a simple comparison of the different chip generations doesn't seem to exist. The best I could find is a matrix from 2012 compiled by Patrick.

Supermicro 2u-4u backplanes in the corresponding chassis as well as norco/chenbro 2-4U are the most commonly used other than breakout cables directly to the drives, third is probably the mobile racks such as this: Supermicro | Products | Accessories | Mobile Racks | CSE-M28SAB

I was talking about the backplane here,
Kinda confused with that page, they seem to be selling the housing for nvme, but there's also backplane part required, i dont think the chassis you mentioned has that backplane?

Ah, I think the backplane/card has to support the pcie lane sharing or auto expanding. It has to do with the sas port/backplane directly I think.

I’m not familiar with that enough to give a detailed answer.

9300-16i is actually 2x 3008. So little power hungry and has a auxiliary power connector in case the PCIe slot isn't capable of supplying more than 25W.
