On my Dell T630 and Dell T7910 the PERC adapters (H730 on T630 and H330 on T7910) can both be set to HBA mode in the bios, or you can set individual drives as passthrough drive (versus raid member/ready).

I don't know how these controllers work in a non-Dell system though (never looked in the PERC BIOS for the options as the regular/computer BIOS lets me make the changes (or the DRAC on the T630 allows for this too).
