Hi,

i bought a used LSI 9271 Raid Controller several weeks ago. So far im very happy with my purchase, but last week i noticed that it doesn't spin down my drives when they are not in use.

I'm running a Windows Server 2016 on a Supermicro X10SDV-4C TLN4F with 3x 6TB WD Reds in a Raid5.

So is there a way to get this working? I have read some stuff about that it's possible with a linux program? If not is there a good Raid Controller which supports it?

Thanks in advance!

Hey,
sorry for my late answer. I found your thread before but the drives just don't go to sleep with these settings. I have attached a powermeter to my server and can see when the drives are switching to idle. But they don't spin down :/
Any more ideas?

your doing it via the registry and not via my reg files yes?
as your id's may be slightly different to mine

e.g. i have two identical systems
but one has a slightly different id in windows for some reason
they are the exact same LSI 9207-4i4e's with the exact same firmware on them

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\PCI\VEN_1000&DEV_0087&SUBSYS_30301000&REV_05\4&3729ec9a&0&0008\Device Parameters\StorPort]
"EnableIdlePowerManagement"=dword:00000001

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\PCI\VEN_1000&DEV_0087&SUBSYS_30301000&REV_05\4&3729ec9a&1&0008\Device Parameters\StorPort]
"EnableIdlePowerManagement"=dword:00000001
see the
4&3729ec9a&0&0008
4&3729ec9a&1&0008

also it may be that you have set it correct and an app is preventing sleep
HP ProLiant Agentless Management on my Microserver if the service is running keeps probing my drives and prevents sleep
Stablebit scanner = same
Stablebit drivepool = same

now it used to be that drivepool worked fine with spindown
but i had it installed the other week and i could clearly see every drive was being accessed
in my 4 bay sas enclosure every 45 seconds or so by the access lights the lights would blink once for a microseond every 45 seconds or so e.g. it was so quick the light barley lit up and it was all 4 drives at the exact same time, uninstalled drivepool and didnt do it anymore.

Hey Shonk,
really thanks for your guide on the other site.
A question: what if the server is running on Ubuntu? Do you think there's something
similar to do?

Thanks in advance,
Michele

LSI adapters in RAID-mode are simply not able to power down "configured drives", regardless of what you put in the registry. LSI removed that "dimmer switch" several years ago. That will work only with unconfigured or hot-spare drives.
Shonk's registry switch does work with adapters in IT-mode and regular HBAs though.

The only way to have this for my raid was buying a DELL Perc adapter.
