Intel Xeon E5-2603 CPU 1.8GHz 4-Core Processor 10MB 6.4GTs LGA2011 SR0LB | eBay

$2.80 each with free shipping and a make offer, seller has over 500 for sale.

It's a E5-2603 four core without hyperthreading or turbo boost and runs at 1.8 ghz.

If you need a socket 2011 cpu for test purposes or do not need very high performance these are too cheap to not get a couple of them.

Or if you just need a cpu and care more about noise or heat issues these are great.

One Open Compute dual node server running four these at %100 it uses 163 watts at the wall.

So thats 81.5 watts for each dual 2011 socket motherboard.

The O.C. server booted up and idling it runs at 104 watts so that's 59 watts for four cpu's running all cores at %100.

Which is very surprising since Intel shows them to be 80 watts TDC each.

Needless to say they run VERY cool and quiet, you can barely hear the fans run.

EDIT: Looked through my notes and found the temps are 45c and 47c running %100. Also found that the last time I checked my OC servers were idling at 104w not 115 so I corrected my post.

This is literally the weakest CPU for the platform. Basically a socket plug till you find a better CPU. But at this price who can complain. Might as well get a dozen - I will be upgrading some E5-26xx systems soon and it will be more profitable to sell my more powerful CPUs separately from the rest of the system.

But if I were to buy a compatible CPU to use in a low power system for myself - I would have added $10-12 and got a E5-2630L instead. I saw them selling as low as $20 shipped for a pair.

It could also be good for an offline backup system as well. It's crazy that in 10 or so years our current processors will be around this price range...

They really could be considered almost free if you add the price of shipping.

I'm sitting on at-least a half dozen E5-2630L V1 -- if anyone wants them for $20 + shipping or buy them all free shipping I'd let them go for that :D Just sitting in trays right now.

Picked up 2. Gonna be useful when I want to swap my engineering sample E5-2665s for E5 v2s. Only the very old X9DAi BIOS will boot with the ES CPU, and only the new BIOS supports E5 v2 CPUs.

Simply because the platform (motherboards, bare systems, etc) are way more expensive and literally makes those CPU worthless.

If the server or the motherboard costs you $100, spending $20 for a E5-2650 or $30 for a 2660 easily triples the overall performance for as little as 10% of overall cost. I agree that there are cases where you'd like to have a cheap CPU to just light up the server, but that use case is very limited, IMHO.

i offered 2.70 ea for qty of 8.

I plan to replace the CPU in my SuperMicro 4 node server to sell the CPU currently in the system separate. maybe with lower costs someone will finally buy the beastly 4 node 2 u server.

Update - offer accepted.

These are handy for the niche crowd (like me) that have low self restraint and keep buying the cheaper "bargains" just because they cost less.

A lot of used 2011 motherboards still hitting eBay that have old BIOS, and I'm still occasionally seeing new bulk/"old stock" Supermicro X9D** for less than $100 on eBay. Businesses still clearing out their old spares I suppose. I got an X9DRT-F and X9DRD-iF so far this year for around $75 shipped. They both had the original BIOS and I needed a first gen E5 in them long enough to update the BIOS for use with E5 v2s. These would be perfect for that.
