A few years ago I bought a X10SDV-7TP4F with a Xeon D-1537, 8 core 16 threads, 35W, relatively affordable. Its perfect for my home use KVM host where I like to spin up VMs for testing and experimenting, container hosting, etc, so perfect that now I'm considering shopping for another. Its been 5 years since the Xeon D-1537, however. Is there anything along those lines, similar number+ of cores and power consumption that people would recommend?

EWPC 3000? But there's some great deals on the d-1541 boards sometimes.

I just spun up my second X10SDV-8c-TLN4F. 10gige, 128GB of DDR4, and 3.2TB of ioDrive storage and it idles at 50W while running a dozen VMs 24x7.

No complaints here.

x10sdv-8c for 50w with 30-ish VMs and up to 128GB RAM.
x11sdv-8c for 100w with 40-ish VMs and up to 512GB RAM.
cant go wrong with either based on your needs, both come with 10gbit ports too.

Well... as a data point: A run of the mill

- Supermicro x9srl-f
- 2650 v2 (8C16T)
- 8 sticks of RAM
- single SSD
- single CPU fan
- platinum PSU

idles at ... under 40w. A 10g Nic may add ~5w to it.

Thanks for the feedback! Seems there is a lot of supermicro love here- which is great as I do, too. Just poking around a little I've looked at the switch up (for me) Intel Atom C395X and the D-1557, which seem in that sweet spot for cores/threads vs power. I want to love the D-21xx line but they seem to be a bit high in the TDP/core ratio as does AMD as a whole.

Starting with your D-1537 as a baseline:

Need MUCH lower power? Get an atom.

Need the same onboard SAS controller? Get another of the same board.

Need more performance at lower power, but no onboard SAS controller? Get an Epyc 3251.

Need even more performance, but with more power consumption? Go Xeon D-2100 series.
