Low noise 1U chassis

Hi, I'm looking for a low noise high efficiency 1U chassis, preferably a SuperMicro model.

I will be using it to host a Hyper-V server, running a couple of VM's.
I will be using 2.5" SSD drives, so I need at least two 2.5" drive bays, more is better.
I will be using a SM X10SLM+-F motherboard with a E3v3 processor.

It will be hosted in a rack in my garage (low noise and low heat required).
Along with a SC846BE16-R920B 4U chassis, also running a X10SLM+-F with a E3v3, used as storage server.

Here is a forum post with one option using a SM SC512L-200B chassis:
X10SLM+-F in SC512L-200B Chassis

I see there are a couple SM options that use 10cm fans, I assume these are quieter compared to the 4cm fans?
I also see a couple low noise PSU's listed, but these are not documented as high efficiency?

The X10SLM+-F page:
Supermicro | Products | Motherboards | Xeon® Boards | X10SLM+-F

Lists the following 1U as specifically compatible:
Supermicro | Products | Chassis | 1U | SC113MTQ-330CB
http://www.supermicro.com/products/chassis/1U/113/SC113MTQ-R400C.cfm
Supermicro | Products | Chassis | 1U | SC512F-350B
Supermicro | Products | Chassis | 1U | SC512F-441B
Supermicro | Products | Chassis | 1U | SC811TQ-350 / SC811TQ-441B
Supermicro | Products | Chassis | 1U | SC813MTQ-350CB
Supermicro | Products | Chassis | 1U | SC813MTQ-441CB
Supermicro | Products | Chassis | 1U | SC813MTQ-R400CB

Any recommendations for a low noise high efficiency 1U chassis?

P.

Does not have to be 1U, for what I need to put in it anything bigger than 1U is a bit wasteful.

As long as the chassis is small and short, i.e. no wasted space and no excessive cost, 2U or even 3U or 4U is fine.
The larger SM enclosures offer more than just size, many more disk bays, redundant PSU's, and the cost goes up.

So 1U silent preferred, larger ok, as long as they are quiet and not too feature rich or costly.

I've used a couple of the SuperChassis 813MTQ-350CB and they are reasonably quiet - only just audible from 6 feet away after the fans have settled down after power up. I'm using them as part of these Supermicro | Products | SuperServers | 1U | 5017C-MTF

I have a couple of the sc512l-200b's running x8sil-f's with x3440's in them. I was scared of the blower on them to start with but once the fan management kicks in they are whisper quiet. The power supply is surprisingly quiet also. I actually have to check for lights or airflow to tell if they are even on.

I'll never get the 10CM blower fan again. I believe Supermicro doesnt even offer them anymore, and replaced all of them with dual or tripple 40mm's. They can vibrate enough to make your disks die, certainly with fan management not doing what it should. (Don't ask)

Those 1U fans typically have an annoying whine even if it is not loud. I have used the 2U Supermicro SC523L-520B along with 2.5" hard drive conversion trays for the same amount of real estate and 80mm fans. That chassis can hold four 2.5" SSDs with two each of MCP-220-00048-0N low profile drive tray and MCP-220-00044-0N dual 2.5" bracket.

1U can work if you have a ginormous fan on one side and duct properly - maybe add a little water cooling :) nothing that hard to work up.

heck listen to a mac pro, it's dead silent when its not doing much.

hello mrkrad, do you use the fan to push or pull the air, do you mean placing it on the chassis lid / cover or in other location? Thank sPGH
