This is great for dealing with the proprietary slots on the *20q/x variants, but a direct-solder solution to convert the *10q/x units would be FAR more useful IMO since there are way Way WAY more of those floating around.

As the original project says, these lanes come directly off the CPU, so the only thing required to use them is adding a few passive components to the existing pads, and then physically connecting the card to the through-hole header.

I'm working on doing this with some salvaged PCIE extension cables, but the work is slow because I've been sick a lot lately.
That is not possible since the Tiny4 series does not have those extra 4 lanes that we can use for the NVMs in the Tiny5 series. It would only have the x8 PCIe lanes for the graphics cards. Also, there are other parts needed if you plan to populate that slot.

There is a conversion kit available to turn the 710Q to an 910x but have not tried it myself. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005442152013.html

Update:

The TinyRisers worked great but the issue I was having with some of my Lenovos was that some of the expansion cards added to the WiFi/Bluetooth adapter had higher connectors and would not allow me to fit any NVMEs.

So I completely redesigned the board and made this: PowerRiser by nandFarm by NandFarm on Tindie

It works with 2230 and 2242 form factor SSDs and you would have to remove the front metal bracket that holds the Bluetooth antenna and some optional speaker.

The designs, tooling, assembly, solder masks and everything are already made and paid for so I can order more of them if there is interest.

Yeah I wasn't talking about an x8 slot and the extra M.2

I only meant wiring an x8 slot directly up to the board directly instead of having to source the expensive proprietary connector AND a riser card.

I know there are passive components required to use the slot on an *10q board.
I've also seen that aliexpress listing. As I understand it there are missing/wrong components, because the seller was just fulfilling an external TaoBao request for a customer and doesn't actually know what was required?

I just haven't had time to work on my end of this project in a while.
My soldering stuff is all packed away because I'm in the SLOW process of rebuilding my workshop...in the middle of about a dozen other higher priority projects and multiple renovations...bleh.

Uh, I know how you feel with the renovations and lack of time for cool projects. I had a mind-numbing 3 year pause on personal projects until we got everything in order on the home front.

Regarding the Tiny4 series. I did not know the story with the TaoBao request. I have on my desk a 910X and its schematics. If you (or anyone else) can send me hi res images of the top and bottom of a mother board of a x10q device I may be able to figure out what is actually missing between the two.

Not sure I can do anything about that proprietary connector though. The connector footprint would also be proprietary I think.
