I'm trying to find a mini-ITX motherboard with a SOC C2338/2358 CPU to use in a custom built home firewall solution. I can't seem to find any C2300 series chips in mini-ITX form. I don't need the power of a 2558 and am looking to keep the price under $200 for the board/CPU combo.

If this isn't an option, what are some thoughts about using a J1900 SoC board for a home firewall?

Lot of comments/threads over on the PFsense forum about the J1900 boards. Personally if i was going down that road i would look at the supermicro X11SBA braswell board as it has IPMI. The catch with it is that it is almost as much as buying a C2550 board.

Not a lot of J1900 boards have IPMI on them. Asrock does seem to have one however, but have not seen any reviews on it

Thanks for the reply. I'm just trying to spec out something inexpensive that will handle a 100Mbps site-to-site OpenVPN connection. That's literally the only thing this router/firewall needs to be able to do that is system intensive as it's going to be sitting at my parents house.

You might be able to get close to that using an EdgeRouter using AES128. They run around 100$ new and can sometimes get them for less than half that used

I'd prefer something that can run pfSense and can do at least AES256. What do you think about the new Netgate 2220 coming out?

The netgate 2200 is going to be a pretty sweet little combo. Flash pfsense onto the ROM and you'll be set. Pfsense sells (or is going to sell) systems with that board too. Adi makes a few boards that can utilize pfsense.

They will be shipping backordered units first, that usually means a month or so before they are in stock again. I've had no issues pre-ordering anything from netgate, I wouldn't hesitate to pre-ordering from the pfsense site either.

Could always looks at the Supermicro X10SBA-L (J1900 + dual I210 nics), need to be running pfSense 2.2 (or later) to support the I210-AT's.

I actually have that board in my backup storage server right now and was thinking of testing it out as a pfSense box. I'm running the latest version (2.2.4) right now so no issues there. As long as it can handle the VPN encryption I think it should work fine. Have no need for more than 2 NICs at my parents house either.
