Hi.

im looking for hot-swap backplane from “old servers” to build a external HDD rack/box.

so I wonder if there is anything out there that I can use. Seen a few with molex for power and 3-4 sas ports.

Can I use any of these to ?
Supermicro Expander Backplane SAS 6G 16x3.5" BPN-SAS2-836EL1
Supermicro Expander Backplane SAS 6G 12x3.5" BPN-SAS2-826EL1

Going to use this on the external box.

My understanding is that you are going to try building the cage yourself (vs cutting the cage out of SM chassis). Depending on your background (other DIY solutions you tried before) this may feel like improvement. The truth is that using commercial backplane with a DIY cage is still inferior to using the backplane together with the cage it was designed for.

So my advice is to use a brand like HP which makes detachable drive cages instead of SM.
Before Chia I used to be able to buy those brand new for like $40 a piece

Reason I want to make my own is that I want a tower and not rack chassi.
I was thinking 8-12 3.5” and 8 2.5”
Or something like that anyway.

and I think it’s fun to make my own stuff if possible and don’t cost to much

Think I’ll make it easy for myself.

get a 16e sas card and 2 of does brackets that is 1e to 4 internal and use “normal” PCs drive cages.

it’s quite hard to find server stuff that relatively cheap in sweden
