Given the ICX7150 went up in price, I was looking at these alternatives:

Aruba S2500-24p (around us$ 100)
HP Procurve 2530-24G (around us$60)
HP Procurve 2910al-24G (around us$50), some reports of running hot and noisy

The Procurve seem to be more recent, the S2500 had some successful fan swaps.

It will be sitting in my home office, so I need a quiet solution. Will power access points and cameras, 4 x 10GbE SFP+ is required.

Experiences/comments/suggestions?

I am using the Aruba S2500-48P. You can take the top off and use 120MM fan to cool the device.
It is much better cooling than the original fan and much quieter.

You can see the change I made here

You could also cut holes on the top to install the 4 120MM fan. it is more secure installation. Many people are doing that too. I didn't do that because I can't restore the switch to original if I ever decide to sell it again.

POE switch tends to run hot. I tried the quiet 40MM fan, the temperature is so hot that it is uncomfortable to touch.

Good luck

Thanks!, I've read regarding your experience. Unfortunately that setup won't pass wife acceptance'.

I am with you.

The hardest part is the wife acceptance.

It is going to be pretty challenging to find one powerful yet quite POE switch without some mod.

Isn't the biggest challenge here the POE side? That is a bunch of power to cool. Any chance of doing a small 10g switch and having the POE box be remote in closet/attic/basement/wherever that noise isn't as big a problem?
I've got a an aruba s2500-24p, which isn't terrible, but is next to a 1u dual e5 box that masks it except at boot.

Well, I'll have 5 APs for users streaming from the 10GbE connected NAS. So, I would need an 10GbE ISL between them. Any idea how
S2500-24p and 2530-24G compare regarding noise?. The HP branded 2530 seems to be cheaper as of today.

They probably sound the same because of the form factor but the thing against the 2530s is they only have 1G SFPs not 10G SFP+.

I've overlooked that, I was sure those were 10GbE also. Will shoot for the S2500-24p then :/

I'm using Juniper ex3300 24p with noctuas, still some coilwhining so would not recommend sleeping in the same room.

/s
was not included in the list, got some feedback from a local service provider, those are always "acting up" from what they told me

Don't think that's common knowledge. Guess it depends what firmware you are running, but not something I've seen people on the juniper forums talk about. It's been around for some time, so I think the major bugs are sorted. I'm very happy to run them in a virtual chassis.
I don't regret going with the ex3300. If I would do it all over again I might end up with Juniper again. The Brocade ICX looks very nice as well, I guess it depends on what you can get your hands on ebay. There are a lot of good options when it comes to enterprise switches XYx 1G/4x10G ports.

The problem with JunOS is its use of FreeBSD's dual partition file system. If your primary and backup OS is out of sync and/or there is a problem with the primary you need to manually intervene. It's also recommended you shut down the device correctly by request system reboot/power-off because of the dual partition "feature." Even if you do follow best practices there is still a chance the primary could be corrupted somehow. In my lab environment I have encountered FS issues once that needed tweaking after a reboot/shutdown. I would prefer Juniper ditch this aspect of FreeBSD and make their devices behave like practically all other network vendors.

I have a Aruba s2500 24T(non poe) and a 48P(poe). The 48P is much louder than the 24T. Idle wattage per APC was 40ish on the 24t and 60ish on the 48p.

Right now my s2500-24p, USG3p, and cable modem combined is pulling down 65w, including about 6w of PoE devices.

Nice, I am going to have to invest in a killawatt meter. My 1300va apc was measuring just the switch about 10 minutes after boot with absolutely nothing plugged into the ports.

That is actually from the UPS, not a meter.
