vPro AMT is better than nothing (until it doesn't work) but I'd really want a non-Intel-219 ethernet board and a full IPMI solution based on Aspeed.

That ASrock board looks delicious with its networking and DDR4.

And yes, I have PCI soundcards and it would be great to put one of them in my workstation/server instead of fooling around with USB.

I can't believe Intel is finally allowing ECC on desktop chips again! I just built a server with a i3-10100E since it was the cheapest chip I could find that supported ECC and quicksync (for plex). It'll be nice to have an upgrade path to an Alder Lake i5 whenever I feel the need to replace this thing.

Real ECC UDIMM must have 10 or 20 chips on it.

I see that now! The chipset supports it but the slots are physically different :(

So in theory a MB manufacturer could make a board that has a mix of ddr4 and ddr5 slots.

yes, there are some rare ones already (non W680)
and at most the CPU memory controller has to support both DDR4/DDR5 the chipset connects only the SPDs of the DIMMs.

W680 chipset supports both memory standards but they are physically different. Intel is so dumb!
there is a mainboard that supports both DDR4 & DDR5 but not at same time. separate Slots for each DDR4 & DDR5.
Many Intel CPUs memory controllers support DDR4 & DDR3.

Sometimes I think @RolloZ170 is not a single person but a role account that is operated by some 20 people. ;)

Since one of my use cases for home servers is waiting for large packages to compile (Linux kernel, ungoogled-chromium etc.) I just looked at some multicore clang rate numbers of Geekbench 5:
Impressive, considering AL has only 2 RAM channels and 8275CL has 6. Single thread also almost double which should give a small Ceph cluster a nice IOPS boost. Only thing I have no use for is the 10GBASE-T chip. Interesting times! Lets see when UDIMM ECC and what other boards show up.

WoW, this platform is amazing. Finally enough cores and PCIe lanes for sensible home server. In the near future even the smallest "big Xeons" are becoming too much of an overkill for homelab. Supermicro is throwing their hat to the platform and it is huge "sombrero" they are throwing.

The only downside is the DDR5 price. Even non-ECC DIMMs cost more than twice for the same capacity :eek:

P.S.
AMD could have owned the space with AM4 and Ryzen 3000/5000. But they never bothered to enter the market. With s.1700 I think Intel is back on the reins and we win a great platform.

Well it took AMD to get Intel off their "4 cores for 500" horse. Capitalism working for you for a change.

What I forgot to write about is idle power. The I/O chip of Ryzen afaik never really sleeps and so this 12nm GloFo part causes higher power draw than Alder Lake. Provided that AL is not kept in C1 permanently because of some PCIe device. For a simple server with 1 Gbps, 2 DIMMs, without IPMI, only 2-3 SATA SSDs, sub 10 watts idle should be doable.

Of course you still need that be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 to cool away 250 watts during burn-in testing.
