I’m building an m920q, 01aj940, HP NV365t and am having a few problems.
- I’ve tried two different 01AJ940 adapters however my network card is not visible in the OS (Linux or windows), it powers up, one light illuminates when network cables connected but no sync. I don’t have anything else with pcie to test my card so ruling out other issues. Suggestions?
- the screw hole on both of my face plates (the bracket on rear that supports the ports) don’t align with the HP card. It fits the Lenovo perfect but the small screw that’s installed through the cards pcb into the bracket won’t fit as the hole in the pcb is too far forward. Theres not allot of room between the card and motherboard so I’m concerned about correct fit.

I don't have a spudger, maybe a toothpick can work? also, how do you cut such a small piece of (I suppose) kapton tape :D

and what is this mod doesn't work with my x710? how can I remove the tape safely?

@WifiCable my gen4 has an i5-13500; I just wonder what riser could work with my Tiny. I mean, is it ever possible Lenovo made risers that don't work??
Toothpick is fine, basically anything not metal

And yeah it was pretty difficult but the idea is - the first cut of tape should just be a long strip of kapton - this is so you can actually hold it in your hand, then from that just cut a bunch of small pieces because:
  1. you're definitely gonna lose a few because they're soooooo tiny
  2. you hope to only have to cut once and just chose from a variety of pieces for the best one that fits

Some tips:
  1. if you have a blade/model knife - use that with a metal ruler
  2. if not, and you just have scissors -note that the piece you cut will likely still be stuck to the scissor blade
So now basically with the toothpick (i'd use two) you basically should be able to pick up the cut tape just by pressing the toothpick to the piece, it will definitely just stick, whether or not its the sticky side. Now, whatever it is, the way to really gett it onto the pad is just to set it down on the pad, and hopefully you have the sticky side down. If not, you'll have to flip over, and hopefully you manage that using both toothpicks

what i would try is getting it to stick on one toothpick, position it near the target pad, then using the other toothpick to slide it off onto the pad

finish off by nudging the tape into place, but very very carefully. Too much force you'll just flick the tape away and you'll have to start over after you wipe away the tears. If you want to secure it by pushing it down, still be careful, just tap the top of the tape

for your other question about risers - i would look up the psref of your gen 4 and the riser model number might be there, but you can also check on lenovo parts page, but i think a google will return the correct model just verify in mutliple places

@WifiCable can correct me if I'm wrong, but the general issue is because Lenovo applies lane reversal to the pcie slot, which seems to affect extension cards that use "x4" and smaller. Such was the case with my dGPU (RX 6400 = pcie 4.0 x4, i think)

in my case, my dGPU would receive power, but was not recognized. Covering that exact CPU pad with tape, disables lane reversal, and thus the card is recognized

you mean my tears? :D jokes apart, thank you very much for your detailed explanation! Unfortunately my eyesight is not good anymore and I decided not to risk my cpu, I can't even see individual pins.
I hope your post will be useful to someone in the future :)
BTW I tried an Nvidia 620 gpu, it didn't work, so I gave up and returned the riser to aliexpress, as it was still in the return window

Hi,
I can confirm that the Supermicro AOC-STGF-i2S works on the M90Q gen 3 with x16 riser but couldn't get ASPM to work so the system is stuck in C2. It uses the Intel® X710-BM2 chipset. I couldn't get the Dell X710-DA2 work. It would get stuck on the Lenovo boot screen. I will try it with cpu pad mod in the future.

quick update. I was just digging around in the lenovo F12 App menu. In the product Diagnostics tab i can see the 3 Ethernet Mac Addresses. One is for the onboard 1GB nic and other two are from the x710. So the card is being deteced. It just doesn't boot past the lenovo logo.

Not sure if anyone has seen this particular Youtube video for adding video to a M720q, but looks like they were able to get noise & heat down with a Radeon card.

They 3D printed parts for a custom case with a 140mm fan for cooling the video & CPU. They did an excellent job wiring everything together as well.


I went and added the following quad port Realtek 2.5gb card from this vendor, I experienced no issues with fitting using the custom backplate.

Third Update: I did the CPU pad mask mod today. I bought a TRENDnet 10 Gigabit adapter from Amazon, which I had read used the Marvell AQC chipset but it seems they updated it, so it now uses the RTL8127 chipset. Anyway, here are the results:

seems like the results on the 3rd item working make sense - covering the pad disables lane reversal which was impacting anything less than x8

Not sure if anyone has seen this particular Youtube video for adding video to a M720q, but looks like they were able to get noise & heat down with a Radeon card.

They 3D printed parts for a custom case with a 140mm fan for cooling the video & CPU. They did an excellent job wiring everything together as well.


I went and added the following quad port Realtek 2.5gb card from this vendor, I experienced no issues with fitting using the custom backplate.

Gah i love ITG.

(edit) oohhhh i see - so the fan noise + heat is self-inflicted right - he's actually pushing the system to run those demanding games

though i kinda wanna do this to my p3 tiny now lol

Hi everyone,

I am looking to drop a dual-port 10GbE network card into a Lenovo Think Station P360 Tiny. I see some general PCIe networking covered here, but I am looking for specific, real-world experience regarding the P360 Tiny layout.

I would love to know the exact 2x10Gb NIC models (either SFP+ or RJ45) that you have actually used and verified to work, along with the specific Lenovo riser part number you paired them with to get them to fit and boot properly. If you have successfully pulled this off, could you share your insight on a few points?
  1. Riser Combo: Did you use the official x16 physical / x8 electrical riser (FRU 5C50W00933 / 5C50W00910), or did you manage on an x4 riser?
  2. The Rear Bracket: How did you handle the rear I/O layout? Did you run it bracketless, modify the stock punch-outs with a Dremel, or is there a 3D-printed rear baffle file floating around that actually aligns properly with the P360 chassis?
  3. Thermals: If you went with Copper RJ45, how are you keeping the temps in check inside the chassis?
Any photos, part numbers, or links to 3D print models of your working setups would be incredibly helpful :)

Good evening guys,

after looking through most of this thread I haven't found a solution for my problem. I am trying to get a Lenovo X710-DA2, crossflashed to newest Intel firmware, to work in my M720q. After trying three 01AJ940 risers from different sources I got myself a PowerRiser by NandFarm thinking all the aftermarket risers could be faulty. I also tried another PCIe card, an old Radeon HD4350 i had laying around, which unfortunately also doesn't work. Both cards work flawlessly in my Dell OptiPlex and my main Desktop. I tried a bunch of different BIOS settings on the M720q, tried the masking hack, nothing works. The cards just aren't recognized entirely. I updated the M720qs BIOS and did a CMOS reset. Just to be safe I got the 135W powerbrick as some people mentioned power problems with theses NICs. Nothing seems to help.

Maybe someone has any idea and could point me in the right direction.

I finally managed to get two m720q units with 10Gb NICs :

- One is running Windows 11 with two 10Gb RJ45 ports.
- The second is running OPNsense with two 10Gb SFP+ ports.

The first one (my everyday computer):

M720q with i5-9400T 16gb RAM (100euros, used, leboncoin.fr)
a homemade 3D-printed case (30 euros, new, leboncoin.fr) Merci pour ta patience IlBarbe ;)
a 3.5-inch Turing monitor integrated in the case (15 euros, new, AliExpress)
a Noctua NF-A12x25 5V PWM (10 euros, used, leboncoin.fr)
an X540-T2 NIC (25 euros, new, AliExpress)
a 01AJ940 SZWXZY riser (8.69 euros, new, AliExpress)
Original power 65Watts.

No extra settings, just update bios and install intel driver for the 10GB card.

WARNING: Do not under any circumstances use an Inspur X540-AT2; it did not work on the M720Q but works with old motherboard ie Sabertooth x58.

In worst case I could even go for a 2 x 2.5GbE card. Does anyone know any 2.5 or 10 GbE network card that has been confirmed to work in the P360
(without any fan modifications etc.).

Using modprobe ist not the best way to so this. Install lm-sensors and run sensors-detect.

At least on my m920x I do not get any fan or voltage information. I can't check the m90q as it is in storage until I can find the time to configure it further.
