sorry, i will clarify my request
I want to remove the wifi board and replace it by a M2 NVMe drive 2230 via an adapter (as you mentionned)

my concern is that the on board (wifi) M2 may not use PCI lane (but only USB ?)

It doesn't matter which wifi card you originally had installed, every M920q has PCIe in the wifi slot. Your particular wifi card seems to be a CNVi model so it wasn't using the PCIe lane in the slot, but the slot still has it. You can use an adapter for an SSD in there.

@DanielL as mentioned above, it’s definitely possible to replace the WiFi with a 2230 drive using an adapter.

The only things to be aware of on the m920q are,
  • You will need to cut the corner off of the adapter board so it doesn’t hit the power switch (do NOT modify the NVMe drive!)
  • You will need to remove the metal bracket that holds the WiFi antenna

I helped a friend who had the exact same problem. The computer would work fine for streaming and such, but once they added a video card and tried some games, they would crash and usually at the same place. It turned out that their CPU temps were super high and climbed when they ran games. We re-applied the thermal paste and it worked. Maybe check your CPU temps? If you changed the cooler on the A2000, did you check the temp under stress?
Specific to these machines, some people have mentioned lower performance / cpu throttling when they use higher wattage power adapters. I don’t think anyone ever found out the root cause, but maybe try it (counter-intuitively) with a lower wattage (hopefully stock) power supply?
I've checked the CPU temps and they weren't really concerning. But since I've had this PC for a while, I figured it wouldn't hurt to repaste anyway.

The PC is now quieter, but still has the same issues. GPU sits at 70°C under load, so I don't think this is it either.

I've also tried different PSU (170W, 135W and 65W) The PC still crashed the same way (except with the 65W that wouldn't boot).

I'm kinda out of options here...

Any more ideas?

I really think that a way to limit power usage on the GPU would help, but I can't seem to figure out how

I have a m920q with i9-9900t 32gb ram 512gb how much is it worth ?
Hard to say since its fairly rare to find a machine with that cpu. In the UK I have purchased some 3 m920q's with i5 -9600T and 32gb of ram with psu's for £100 - £140 each. Currently they seem to be selling on ebay for around the same price. Exceptions are those where companies are offering 12 months warranty and have sold for £200 and sometimes more.

There is a listing for a m920x with the i9-9900T at £516 but its been relisted multiple times over the last 6 months and originally priced at £1100 ish. The only listing for a i9-9900T in the UK is £219 but again has been there for months. CEX offer a Lenovo M720Q/i9-9900T/16GB DDR4/1TB SSD/W11 for £200 although it is out of stock (They offer £88 cash to buy or £126 in vouchers). Hopefully this information might help you gauge its worth. If you are in the UK and decided to sell I would be interested.

Tried to do the bifurcation mod myself for the M920x but I ended up frying the motherboard putting it back together. I'm looking for somebody to do the solder job for said mod instead of risking frying another motherboard. I do have the jcbo Tiny5 Riser if you need something to test it out with.

Is there an E-key to PCIE adapter that would allow you to use the PCIE Gen 3x2 lanes from that wifi slot?
If you’re referring to the m920q/x, the limitation isn’t due to the adapter. The WiFi slot on the motherboard is only connected at PCIe Gen3x1 to the PCH controller.

I'm talking about the m720q, but I thought the link speed on it was Gen3x2?
Ah, okay. I don’t have the schematics for the m720q, so I can’t confirm, but I would be surprised if it had more lanes. From what I can tell from the A/E key slot pinout they only have a single lane exposed, but I could be wrong.

I'm from Germany if interested. Already did a bunch of these mod also with switch for on/off the bifurcation.

Make sure it's not because of inserting the riser incorrectly, the j4cbo riser has an issue where it can fry a part on the board if you install it shifted too far to the back. It's documented here: The computer burned out with the board connected. · Issue #24 · j4cbo/tiny5-m2-riser
It would be a shame if that was the cause and fried another modified board in the future.

Hi, after scrolling the thread back and forth I would love if someone could share their experience:
I've got a M920x, with a non-T i5 8500, and an AMD W6400 GPU (basically an RX6400 with a nice blue shroud), which draws up to 50W.
I've seen people successfully use those with the 35W CPU's, but there's limited resources about using a dGPU with a 65W CPU in those Tiny's.
Does anyone have experience with a 65W CPU + dGPU and could confirm it will run in gaming workloads, or is the motherboard itself going to limit powers and would switching to a 35W CPU be the solution?
I do plan on adding a 140mm fan to the top cover to keep the thermals at bay, but not sure if I'll hit board limitations rather than thermal first.

Hi, I have 3 M720Q units. Should I use an adapter to convert the Wi-Fi slot to NVMe, or get a PCIe to NVMe adapter? I want to use at least 2 SSDs and set up RAID 1 on these M720Qs.

After looking at the board again, that was exactly what happened! So it looks like this board is salvageable!!! Will work on replacing that mosfet and return with results
