Seller also has the HP SAS Expander for $16.98 if you want to go big. Not sure why it says 3Gbps in the description though. Pretty sure it's 6Gbps per HP's part number.

Looks like SAS is 6Gbps while SATA is limited to 3Gbps.

Nope. Tried finding the most recent on Lenovo's website but gave up.

Anyone know what the most recent firmware is and where to find it?

I just got a Lenovo RD440 70AF with one of these installed. So far I have only found 2 firmware versions 013a and 013d. Mine appears to already have 013d.

They seem to only be included in comprehensive firmware isos from lenovo:

datacentersupport.lenovo.com

You can cat /proc/scsi/scsi and the Rev should be the firmware version.
