For up to 12 mixed SAS / SATA, hdd/ssd, how does one decide between 9211 or 9207?

Planning to use OmniOS / ZFS.

This is my first server, in a home lab setting, will primarily be a compute node for computational chemistry.

I have not been keeping up with the price delta between SAS2008 vs SAS2308 based cards. Last I checked it wasn’t much ($10 - $15). Check for HP H220 or Dell OEM 9217 cards. Make sure it’s D1 version of the chip. The older version only negotiates PCIe Gen2 speeds. I’d steer clear of the LSI cards from chinese imports to avoid the risk of counterfeits and prefer used Dell/HP/Lenovo etc.
