$450 for the below:

Dell R710 PowerEdge Rack Mount Enterprise Server
Dual HEX-Core Intel Xeon E5645 CPU
12GB RAM - PC3-10600E
Energy-Efficient 570W Power Supply Unit
(4) 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet Adapters.
Windows Server R2 2012

They're not bad servers at all for virtualization, but at that price I'd want more memory. Running one locally w/ 128GB RAM. Paid ~$1k from Dell Refurbished about 1.5 years ago. My biggest gripe is the errors you get when using non-Dell hard drives. ESXi 6.5 though works on it just fine. Upgraded earlier this week without issues.

Agreed, you're not really getting that much for the money. I still love Xeon 5500 and 5600 systems, but if you poke around you can grab them in the $100 to $200 range for something decent.

If you're looking for a name brand server of that generation, you might want to look at HP's stuff. from what I can find, HP systems from that time seem to go for less than their Dell counterparts (DL360 G6/G7 vs R610 and DL380 G6/G7 vs R710). Not sure why, maybe because of HP's official line on withholding firmware updates without a support agreement or maybe there's just more HP stuff out there. It's not like you can't find the firmware packages on the internet. If you are looking on eBay, something like this has the same processors but has hard drives and more memory and is substantially cheaper at $300 shipped: HP Proliant DL380 G7 2x E5645 2.4ghz 6-core, 24gb RAM, 2x146gb HDD P410i 1GB | eBay

Do you know if the Dell has an activated copy of Server 2012 R2? If it does, and if you want that OS, that could make it worth it.

R710s all well past their prime. You can get next gen stuff for less.
Next gen stuff for less? Links would probably be helpful for people. Those weird purpose built machines with single 10Gb SFP+ ports and 0 to 1 expansion slots don't -really- count.

That sounds a bit expensive for what you are getting. I agree with @raiderj that there is not enough memory for the price. 12G means they filled it up with spare, low density sticks from the parts drawer. You will most likely have to replace them all to get a reasonable amount of memory.

The machine is decent, the processors are great. The memory is lacking and the price is high. The only possible reason to consider that deal is if you really needed the windows server 2012 license, but even then ... it is too expensive for the package.

Have some patience, this one is overpriced. Should be under $250. Newer gen gear does pop up from time to time and can be had similar prices.

A deal for X9DRD-EF 1U 2xE5-2620 was posted just a couple days ago. The non-weird stuff tends to go real quick when it's cheap.

You can find much better deals on the R710 if you follow ebay closely.
For example a just completed auction:

This is a Dell R710 it is in full working condition.
2 x L5650 Intel Xeon Proccessors @2.66 GHz (low power draw HEX Cores)
30 GB of DDR3 ECC RDIMMs
PERC 6i raid controller
2 x 146GB 15k SAS drives
Comes with a PCI SCSI controller for connection to a DAC

This Went for $132.50 + 21.50 shipping
you still might have to add some ram but at least it was dirt cheap!

dell r710 | eBay

Others:

Dell PE R710 Server 2x 6-core E5645 2.4Ghz 72GB 4x 500GB SATA H700 iDRAC6 2U | eBay

Dell Poweredge R710 2.5″ 2x L5640 2.26ghz Hex Core 64gb 8xTrays Perc6i LocalPU | eBay

For the same price I got 144gb ram, 2 x 1 Tb 10k drives, dual power supply, free shipping, and rails. Your 710 is way overpriced.

LOL, You are right, no such animal, I guess there was a typo and they likely meant either L5645 or X5650.
I blew by it thinking it was the L5645 (which I believe is the fastest of the low power Hex cores....)
