Is my hard drive past the point of no return? Or is it ok?

Hi All,

I have finally started to make my NAS Server and before I got a chance to set the pool up FreeNAS gave me a warning telling me that one of my drives had issues.

When I checked the issues there are around 3543 Uncorrectable Sectors / Pending Sectors does this mean that they are all marked as bad?

What makes me question this that if I read the SMART info below the errors were detected when the drive was 77 hours old it is now nearly 4000 hours old and not had any errors since then or issues. The drive was being used as Media Storage and was nearly at capacity most of the time when it was in my old server.

Now I ran the extended test on SMART and it says it is going to take 15 hours to complete which I guess is fair enough as its a big drive however what is concerning me more is that 5 hours in and it still says there is 90% remaining and the progress hasnt increased at all.. Is this normal? The disk is idle as I havent created a pool yet so I know it is not usage that is causing the extra delay. If there is a read error does the SMART test just fail or will it run for ever more?

If it makes any difference the drive is a Seagate SMR Drive,.

I have attached my hardware and the extended results below:

Hardware:

FreeNAS 9.10 U2
ESXi Whitebox running on Asus P87QM-E Motherboard
LSI 9211-8i Running in pass through
16GB DDR3 RAM

When I checked the issues there are around 3543 Uncorrectable Sectors / Pending Sectors does this mean that they are all marked as bad?
Normally (but see below) they are sectors that the drive knows are bad, but hasn't done reallocations on because no attempt has been made to write to those sectors after they were found to be bad. A full write of the drive should move these from pending to reallocated.
What makes me question this that if I read the SMART info below the errors were detected when the drive was 77 hours old it is now nearly 4000 hours old and not had any errors since then or issues. The drive was being used as Media Storage and was nearly at capacity most of the time when it was in my old server.

Code:
  40 51 00 ff ff ff 0f Error: UNC at LBA = 0x0fffffff = 268435455
This just screams "buggy Seagate firmware". All of these errors happened at a "magic number".

You didn't post the exact model or firmware, not that it would help a lot as Seagate doesn't make firmware updates available for retail drives except in very rare cases (and then they get it wrong).

If this is a retail drive, RMA it. If it is an OEM drive, you're probably out of luck. You can check the warranty status here.

Thanks for your reply, Unfortunately the drive has no warranty and is an OEM drive. Firmware updates there isnt any of either lol!

I thought it was a bug given that everything happened at the one time. I have a memory of a total freak power loss in the middle of doing a large scale copy operation between two hosts which might explain what you say above.

That does make me slightly more hopeful as there is a bizarre scenario here where the drive has been written to ~capacity with media for plex and has been happily serving it up for months without an issue but FreeNAS says it has problems, which I don't doubt., However, saying that both a short and long smart test fail to complete and just hang forever again not sure if that is a firmware bug or not.

What would be the best next step then, use dd and 0 fill the disk to capacity and see what happens?

If it clears itself up after the dd I can probably put it in the pull failing that I can most likely swap it out and have is as a scratch / dump directory although a large drive like that using SMR is not ideal for that purpose

So after being recommended on another forum to run dd, then badblocks then a full smart test its resolved!

must have been buggy firmware after all!
