I'm looking to pick up 2 of these, mainly for VMs and a Plex media server. Seems to be quite a few of them available on eBay. Are these the current bang-for-buck CPU?

I just upgraded two 2670 v1's ($200 for the pair) to 2680 v2's ($350 for the pair). The performance increase in my specific situation (plex, file server, VMs) is not worth the premium. Others may have different needs and different opinions.

I would recommend spending the cash differential on more memory instead - critical for a file server if caching mechanical hard drive writes.

(If you would like my 2670 v1's, just send me a message.)

what about energy efficency ? Idle powerconsumption ?

25% performance increase and you pay $150 more, of course the performance won't worth the premium. However highlights for v2 is on power consumption... You should save couple bucks on the power bill every month.

Why do you think that a 115 W-rated E5-2670 draws more power than a 115 W-rated E5-2680 v2?

I think 2680 v2 is def more cost effective than 2690 v2 or 2696 v2 at this point. it's too bad we don't have anything else left for 2011 v2....

4 year leases will be seeing the last 2680,90 v2 etc hit the market 2018 and early 2019, with that the last ddr3.

This is pretty accurate... Recently picked up 2650L's, 2660's and 2680's. Definitely worth it, from a performance and power perspective. Replaced some 2670 V1's and 2643 V1's. Less heat too.

Ivy Bridge CPU's bring some performance benefits for VMware, so, that alone helps workloads versus the V1's if you are running many VM's on one machine...

well, it's not like there is a choice now I think that the cheap supply of 2670 v1 has dried out a long time ago. At this point, there's really no benefit going v1 unless you really don't have much of any money and just want some sort of xeon cpu. Cheapest mainstream v2 would be the 2660 v2. Wants a little more performance, get 2680 v2... want to spend a lot for smaller additional gains? get 2690 or 2696 v2...

I couldn’t get these for less than $173 for 2. The guy was pretty adamant and really not negociating one bit… I guess I should’ve tried different sellers but, still: $346 for 2x E5-2680v2?? I’m down! :D

Tried to find the lowest price and they wouldn't budge. A single company sells under multiple user names so the market isn't competitive.

It looks like they increased the prices by about $~30 on some chips, but this was before Meltdown and Spectre were released. This should decrease chip prices.

if anything, i have seen an overall trend of increasing price for all the 2011 cpu since 6 months ago.

2660 v2 is no longer avail for $110. it's now like $140. which make 2680 v2 the go to choice now. but that might increase as the result of 2660 v2 price increase.... so if you want 2680 v2, you should get it now....

2690 v2 is fairly stable around $300. kinda overpriced for the small increased speed over 2680 v2

forget about 2696 v2, those are now ridiculously priced at well over $450-500..

the 2686 and 2696 v3 are both well over $600....

So really at this point 2680 v2 is probably most reasonable..
