just a few months ago, i was able to get a pair of E5-2680v2 for $160/each. I know others here have gotten even better deals. But since then, prices have continued to rise and now around $215-$220. I saw a listing for a bunch of E5-2670v2 just 2 days ago for $180/each and they all sold out within a day! I didn't think the IvyBridge Xeon prices would bottom out only so briefly and bounce back up so quickly?

You should check out some of the v3 price. some of them are actually quite good compared to the current v2 prices..... if only ddr4 were much cheaper....lol...

i haven't seen that, but regardless any cost savings on CPU will be trumped by the 2x cost of DDR4 vs DDR3.

More like 3x test days. I was lucky to get couple of 16gb 2400s for ~$110 some time ago. Of late, it's been stubbornly around ~$160.

Lessons that I have learned in this game.

There are 3 variables, CPU , System board , RAM.

For modern hardware, we would be extremely lucky for all 3 variables arrive at the lowest cost at the exact same time.

What I learn is to up stock up supply each item when price is low while the other items such as system board or RAM price is high.

In 2016 DDR4 RAM price was cheap ($50 for 16gb stick ) , I purchased whole bunch DDR4 ram. v3 CPU and system board price were high.

Then, late 2016 to 2017 , v3 CPU were onsale, I purchased over 30 E5 v3 CPU with average price around $110-$120
6 months ago, cheap E5 v3 CPU supply dried up , then the X99 and C612 system board became cheap.
I.e. $75-$125 for X99 board, $175-$225 for dual Supermicro , ASUS boards.

Today, my stock of DDR4 ram is very low, so I install a single 4gb DDR4 ram into the v3 CPU system.
In the meantime, I use it for crypto mining to make some money.
Patiently , waiting for cheaper price DDR4 ram to return.

those are good points. although it requires you to lock up your money in inventory of things you can't immediately use. if there are enough systems being built all the time, it makes a lot of sense though. another risk of that approach, especially with used hardware, is that you might stock up on used computer components you can't immediately test to make sure they are in working order.

Do make sure you have at least a cheap woking component for each so you can test out stuffs you buy, esp from ebay. I was sent 3 bad 2690 v2 from 3 different sellers!

indeed. my ebaying of used server components has experienced a lot of duds too. hence, my mention that such purchases require immediate testing. i think Marsh's idea of buying various components when they are low makes sense if you have a decent stock pile of parts and are just "replenishing" the stock pile when the opportunity arises for a bargain. i do something similar with consumables for the household; tissues, toilet paper, motor oil/oil filters, non-perishable food items, etc., just not usually server parts.

Also to check back on here frequently for good deal posts as the good deals are usually gone fast.. and do jump on it when theres one esp if you do have some spare cash.... never when you need that parts later...lol...

I got 2x 2686 v3, 2x 2696 v3, 2x 269x v4 something early es when they were all around 500 -600 each... as well as 2x 2696 v2 2680 and 2660 v2 when they were all good price.. guess time to put them to mining use? Tired of just running benchs and calculate pi...

Just got a pair of 2680v2 for £170 ea. Seemed like a good deal going by recent prices, and the fact I was outbid at roughly the same price for a pair of 2643v2 last week...

I've had my eyes out for a pair of 2680v2:s but prices I've seen has been around £200+/$275 each w/o shipping. I bought two 2690v2 for £390/$540 hoping I made a good deal. Starting to wonder if I should have aimed for 2650v2 instead, those prices seems much more easier to find good deals on.

Me too... if you think about it, looking at your consumption till the expiry date, (e.g. buying 6mths coffee) and are saving 10% or more. Then you are getting a better return than interest in a bank account = more money to spend on computer gear.

I'm gonna be 'that guy' and just admit I haven't been keeping up with the current trend as I already have some chips, but say I wanted to swap them out, what's the best bang for buck CPU right now? I would be looking at getting 8 or so.

i consider it some what of a rare find, but i was just able to pick up 4x E5-2680v2 processors for $175 each, which I think is a decent deal at the moment. keep your ebay search alerts on and act quick and you might be able to find something similar.
