Given how horrible the v1 and v2 prices have gone up lately, if you exclude the exorbitant ddr4 price, the v3 cpu prices for some of these cpu are actually not very bad now relatively.

For example, this e5-4660 v3 with 14 cores for $385 but can maybe get the seller to go $360?:

Intel Xeon E5-4660 v3 ES QH9D 2.10GHz 14-Core 35MB LGA2011-3 CPU | eBay

Here's a benchmark:

UserBenchmark: Intel Xeon E5-4660 v3

compared to e5-2696 v2 which is now well over $400. benchmark:

Asus Z9PE-D16 Series Performance Results - UserBenchmark

As you can see, the e5-4660 v3 is a better bargain. if you don't consider ddr3 vs ddr4 price.

given that a new xeon silver 4114 10 cores has significantly worse benchmark and is currently $800+ with only avx-512 as something brand new. and a lower but not that low tdp of 85w, the older cpus are still fairly good bargains, just as not good as a while back ;(

Okay. I can agree to that. Let me rephrase part of the above - Make sure the board being used supports/has the microcode in the BIOS to handle the CPU.

You also have to consider that the E5-4660 V3 auction you are talking about is an Engineering Sample. So finding a motherboard that plays nice with ES - is a game of its own.

Check this out, All-core-turbo to 2.9GHz

Model name: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-4667 v3 @ 2.00GHz
Stepping: 2
CPU MHz: 2899.296
CPU max MHz: 2900.0000
CPU min MHz: 1200.0000
BogoMIPS: 3998.77
Virtualization: VT-x
L1d cache: 32K
L1i cache: 32K
L2 cache: 256K
L3 cache: 40960K

all-core-turbo to 3.2Ghz
Model name: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-4655 v3 @ 2.90GHz

There goes the E5-46XX V3 supply :)

Add X10DRi to the compatible list. Though I don't have the skills of finding deals like @Marsh or @BLinux, got a couple of QS E5-4650 V3 at a decent about $210 each. All the V3s have spiked with the AnandTech thread on all-core turbo unlock mod.
V4 cpus do not have that "feature"

Single E5-4667 v3 produce 741 H/s SUMO or XMR ( 2MB L3 cache per mining thread)

I am not mining Aeon with this CPU.

Marsh, you're tha man! Search both of those e5-4xxx parts you mentioned and they are all above $600...lol. guess I missed the boat on those?

Anyway, here's e5-2658 v3 for $218:

Intel Xeon E5 2658 V3 ES 2.0Ghz 30MB 12 Core 22nm 105W LGA2011-3 Processor CPU | eBay

and it's faster than 2680v2 for both single and multithread:

2680 v2: User System Performance Results - UserBenchmark

2658 v3: UserBenchmark: Intel Xeon E5-2658 v3

if it wasn't for the still cheaper ddr3 compared to ddr4, we wouldn't be talking about v2 cpu anymore with the recent increase in price....lol....
