What would the next server CPU flood be? I'm guessing it happens every five years?
E5-2670's were released Q1 2012, V2's were released Q3 2013. So, no, not 5 years. More like 1.5-2 years. It looks like we are already seeing some of the V2's being re-sold.

Most companies that I have worked with do 3 or 4 year leases, none have done 5 but I do know that some do.

It's been 10 years since I was in IT infrastructure but at that time, the cost of vendor support contracts would become much more expensive after 3 years and would make sense to replace than paying for the cost of extending it. Not sure if that changed.

Depends on how you negotiated it and the size of the order.

Looks like the E5-2650 v1's are heading up in price now, was $49.95 last week now the lowest on ebay is $60.00
Also the 2660's and 2665's are more also.

V1 are rising and V2 are dropping in price slowly, still too much for the V2's for me.

The 2650L and lower spec cpu's are about the same price.

in spite of the drop, I don't think v2 price will ever get into the sub $100 like v1

Well it looks like the E5-2665 V1 , 2660 V1 , 2650 V1 and even the 2650L V1 cpu's supplies are drying up on ebay.

Plus the 2650's and 2650L are going up in price even more.

i just watched a vid (
) comparing the 2670 with amd threadripper 1950x which linked here and i am more interested in the cheaper xeon cpus as i am on a tight budget, but looks like people here saying the prices are going up? is there any cheaper intel cpus that are good for home server with about 8 cores? thanks.

E5-2650 or E5-2660 both are 8 cores with slower clock.
Be patient, there are still cheap E5-2660 v1 or E5-2650 v1 out in the wild of Ebay.

Also look out for the v2 CPU

If you can score a inexpensive dual xeon 2011 board there are decently speedy CHEAP four core E5-26xx v1 Xeons.

2660v2 has about the same multithreaded perfomance as 2670, but much lower power consumption. And the same price.

actually ebay current spot price of e5-2660 v2 is slightly cheaper than e5-2670 v1

e5-2660 v2 $115 or less: SR1AB INTEL XEON E5-2660V2 10 CORE 2.20GHz 95W PROCESSOR FOR DELL T5600 C8220 | eBay

2670 v1 $124: SR0KX Intel Xeon E5-2670 2.6GHz Eight Core (CM8062101082713S) Processor 675901145510 | eBay

The multithread performance of 2660 v2 is actually slightly better than 2670 v1.... for lower power consumption. Single thread slightly slower but who cares.... it's a win win for multithread. Forget 2670 v1.....

no point getting 2670 v2 as it's the same price as 2680 v2...
