Folks, I probably missed the answer earlier in the thread, but any chance of future uATX Xeon D boards with 8 DIMM slots, or is the SoC itself limited to 4? Just wondering if 128GB via 8x16GB DIMMs would ever be an option versus 4x32GB DIMMs.

4 Dimm slots max, ASRock has a uATX board supposedly....not shipping yet though.

For anyone using the SuperMicro X10SDV-TLN4F and are utilizing the 10Gbe NICs, what networking hardware are you using in conjunction with it (switches, GBICs, etc.) and what results are you seeing?
I'm currently using the Netgear S3300-28X (GS728TX) as a low cost switch to convert between SFP+/10GBASE-T. It's basically a 24 port gigabit switch with 4 dedicated 10Gbe ports (2xSFP+&2x10GBASE-T). I haven't done any intensive benchmarking yet.. but figured I would share what I was using.

NETGEAR Support | S3300-28X (GS728TX) | Smart Switches

I'm apparently one of the rare ones that couldn't care less about SPF+ support. My plan is for a rack to live in the basement and run ethernet to the office upstairs, so I'm going to have a decently long run of copper.

I like everything about the X10SDV-TLN4F (SM, pairs of both GbE and 10Gbase-T, so I can leave the high power 10G ports disabled until I'm ready for it) except the form factor. I want more PCIe slots. I'm starting to wonder if they'll ever release mATX or larger.

ASRock has the D1540D4U-2T8R, which is close (albeit as yet unreleased). I lose the second pair of GbE ports, but gain onboard SAS, which is what I was going to put in a slot anyway (ideally SFF-8087, not SFF-8643, but it converts). I'm a little afraid of the price of that, though, and I'd rather have SM as a brand.

Still just a little surprised at the lack of availability and variety nearly six months after release.

I think that for most of us we want SFP+ because we already have switches that support that and dont want to have to get another switch just to support 10gb-T if it is not needed. I have 5 ports that could support SFP+ right now at home but none for Base-T

AFAIK they won't make anything above 1GB because of the higher electrical demand from the copper ports. The do make external boxes (S-10GT-SFP USA | 10GBase-T Media Converter | Perle) but at those prices, I'd look at buying a 10GB Base-T module for my switch off ebay.

Ya i am already keeping my eyes open for a 10gb base-t module for my switches however at this point from what i have seen it would be cheaper to go an pick up a netgear s3300 switch instead and replace one of them than it would be to get the module needed

Would much prefer if the board just came with SFP+ instead :)

Don't you need higher clocks?
For the small servers, not at all. Especially with Minecraft, most of the larger providers are running on low clock E5's.

However, for our larger servers I do stick to the E3-13xx

I've seen those types around but wasn't sure if that was my only option. I have an IBM G8124 so I'm stuck unless, as stated, buy another switch for 10GB Base-T ... *grumble*

Just wondering, what racks are you using with these? Also are you building them or are you buying pre-built.

Seeing what folks are doing for cooling. I finally got 3x of the right I/O shields for these. Took a long time!

They're custom built.

They are colo'd at wholesaleinternet. I'm currently in the process of architecting an OpenStack deployment involving the 1540's.

Only question I would pose is why when you can BYO for significantly less with more juice under hood and place your own pdSense image on it, sm 503 chassis that a lot of folks use here looks like a similar formfactor.
