Is this a general trend for all E5+ (32nm or later/lower) or just Broadwell?
Like car engines turning off cylinders to save juice?

Still bouncing off the fence of what to get because of these pesky watt prices here...

Ivy Bridge was not great at it (but it was a 22nm v. 32nm). Haswell and Broadwell are better.

Are there any Xeon D boards with NVME options? Either through a SFF plug or M.2 slot?
Or is it possible somehow to retrofit a NVME drive (Intel 750 or M.2) to a regular SAS HBA (mini-SAS SFF8087 port)?

I'm doing a mITX vSAN build to host my home lab etc. and already have the SAS HBA card.

    1. Use the MSI TURBO U.2 HOST CARD in combination with i.e. Intel 750 SSD 2,5" PCIe 3.0 x4 (notice the 2.5" form factor). Intel has an U.2 adapter cable supplied with any of the 2.5" SSDs.
    2. Optional:
      1. (Sure)Use the Supermicro AOC-SLG3-2E4 (bifurcate the PCIe slot into to two U.2 slots) in combination with i.e. Intel 750 SSD 2,5" PCIe 3.0 x4
      2. (Unsure) Or use a SAS HBA card with any of the SSDs available with NVME

So the Xeon D boards from Supermicro and ASRock Rack have m.2 slots onboard. The ASRock Rack boards are SATA so SM has M.2 slots.

As @Remko mentioned, you can add one of those add-on cards (make sure to get the non-R version, the 2E4R version will be problematic.) But those use a slot which you are likely to use with your HBA.

Most of the U.2 cards are in between the sizes that the Supermicro board supports via screw/ spacer standoffs. Is it possible? Yes. Is it pretty? No. It is also hard to secure. I have requested SM makes a custom PCB with the connector for their mITX.

I had actually missed that M.2 slot on the Xeon D boards, but that solved my issue for adding a PCIe/NVME cache drive.
    Thank you both!

For anyone interested: 2x 23.5" NVMe added as well to the Xeon D MicroLab.

Does anyone have a lead on whether Xeon-D supports posted (external) interrupts as is touted for E5 v4?

I think it does since that is a Broadwell feature.

Also if anyone is interested... this arrived.

This is certainly a production board and I had heard that Gigabyte had US shops who ordered them so I would imagine availability soon.

I thought I'd share my temporary setup for the X10SDV-6C+-TLN4F, waiting on case and final PSU but couldn't wait to get it going with ESXi 6 and pfSense.

Had a play with this yet? I've decided I'm giving up on my 16 core dreams since SFP + mitx is more important in my home lab, and would love an opinion before I pull the trigger on the first one I can find :D.
