UPDATE: I opened a support ticket with Intel and they were able to confirm that the x710-DA2 does not support x2 speed. Only x1, x4, or x8.

I have 10gb networking in my desktop and recently upgraded from an Intel x520-DA2 to an Intel x710-DA2 (Dell OEM original fully updated firmware). I did the upgrade because I am expanding my system and have to move the PCIE nic down a slot. The bottom slot in my system is capable of PCIE 4.0 x2. Being that the intel x520 is PCIE 2.0, I was not able to get full 10gb speed and figured I would upgrade to a PCIE 3.0 card because if it ran at full x2 speed, it would be able to achieve full 10gb bandwidth for a single port.

However, when I plugged in the x710, device manager shows that the card is only running at x1 speeds. Reseating the card, updating drivers, updating firmware, didn't seem to work. The card still ran at x1 speed. Interestingly, device manager details shows that the card's maximum link speed is x1. When I move the card to a slot capable of x4, it shows that it runs at x4 speeds and max link speed details then show x4. Max link details never show x8 that the card is capable of.

When I had the x520 installed, device manager would show that it is running at PCIE 2.0 x2 speeds. Device manager would also show that max link speed for the card was x8.

Any idea why the card won't negotiate to x2 speed and if there is anything I can try to force it to x2?

Intel cards are known to get unhappy anytime they have less than 4x pci-e lanes. I've seen that behavior with both X710's and E810's.

Dang. Any idea if cross-flashing the card to Intel firmware will potentially help? I don't really want to lose WOL with the card, but would be willing to give it up if it will work in an x2 slot.

Also, any idea why the PCIe max link speed is only reporting what it's currently running at vs what it could run as?

no idea on cross flashing.

I've found that the Mellanox cards work much better in a 2x slot.

I was looking at connect-x3 as the other alternative, but I was drawn to the x710 Dell OEM for the WOL functionality. By chance do you know of any Mellanox SFP cards that support WOL that would meet these needs?

I've never messed with WOL, so don't have any answers for you there. The Mellanox cards I've used in a 2x slot are the 4x series.
