We've never tried with a separate PCI card. All of our servers have backplanes that can do SAS and U.2 connections.

I'd investigate whether your SAS backplane can handle NVMe already. Usually it's the first two drive slots per CPU, so a dual CPU system typically can handle four U.2 drives.

What I've found is for most server models if you pull up the spec sheet and parts list you can usually find a little NVMe interposer board that isn't advertised anywhere that has these connections. Then contact a distributor to purchase, they're usually cheap, $30-50 at most. I know Cisco, HP, and Supermicro are like this, unsure of Dell.

Maybe interested to run 2 of them as ZIL/SLOG disks in a ZFS array on a PCI-E 3.0 8x slot. Should be theoretically capable to do 7gb/s like the disks do but I am not sure if there are enough lanes with the cpu to operate these disks.

Will this work on X10SDV-7TP4F with a 9400-16i, 9500-16i or 9405w-16i Does anyone know this?

I think you'd be better off with an AOC-SLG3-2E4T/AOC-SLG4-2E4T if the XeonDs properly do bifurcation nowadays (there was another thread but i have not followed it).

However, I dont think you will see the desired performance levels with this CPU - 1.7 to 2.3 Ghz will need a lot of parallel threads to scale up so high.
I am quite surprised that you get 7GB/s from this board with spinners(?), but that might be a bit too OT here.

Any recommendations for U.2 to PCI-E cards? I have an older one not sure what spec it is. I remember when these Optane drives were reviewed Intel sent cards out too but don’t know model number.

The price has been increased. Now it's $650 (but it's listed as "New"). He has a 800 Gb version as well (was $1100, now it's $1300). It was so too sudden, I hadn't even bought my 800 gb. :D I'll be waiting for my chance on 1,6 Tb version :cool:

Haven’t checked TB written. Packaging leaves me to believe it was used. Not concerned with wear with the endurance rating on these. Was glad to see firmware was out of date according to MAS, easy update and confirms they are running original firmware.

One more question... Was the package you received authentic and original (S/N; P/N were the same on the clamshell and on the SSD)?

Seller offered two 400Gb for $1,000 if anyone is interested.
I was about to pull the trigger on the 800GB for $1000 but he relisted for $1,300 like the poster above me said. I got one 400GB and will keep waiting if he decides to lower the price or list any 1.6TB for a good price.

Finally got mine too... issues running on a X11SSZ-TLN4F though (freeze on boot)... need to involve SM support.
Drives are great, working on more recent boards without issues

If you haven't already, try a bios update. Many bioses of that vintage had a bug which caused a boot freeze whenever a drive supporting multiple NVMe namespaces (which these do) is plugged in. Of course if no new bios for your motherboard is available, then yes, SM support would be the way to go.

That was my first idea, didn't help. SM now provided the most recent Beta BIOS... Will need to see if that helps

Quick update - At this point I think its an issue with running PCIe 3 and 4 drives at the same time.
Both drives work independently, but as soon as both are installed (in backplane, or directly with a PCIE to U2 converter) the board is stuck (initializing AHCI, A2). Installed the Beta Bios but didnt help.

Will need to see if SM support has any idea for that...
Any one know of a deal some large cheap PCIe4 U2 drives (ideally on vsan capacity drive compatibility list) :p?

Edit - combining a P5800X with some older drives works fine on other boards (Asus Z11PA), so maybe a board limitation after all

Edit2 - also no issue on X10SRI and Intel x10 boards

Edit3 here are my perf values on PCIE3 - I think @Weapon's might have been slightly skewed due to cache impact and only 1G test size. Or his box is faster than my 6134m :)
Note my mix is write heavy (90%) and this is CDM 7.

Top is 970 pro 512G I had in there, bottom is the P5800x (onboard Oculink controler)
