Miniknight, great idea, already have 1356 boards both intel and supermicro for some time, just picked up a E5-2448L for 300. List was 600. and 2 x e5-2418l for 70@ last week, now to await for them to arrive down under.
Thanks! I just picked the remaining 2 E5-2448L for 280 each. Guess im upgrading the CPUs before even getting the motherboard or the dual E5-2418L i planned on using :)

I have question regarding value between E5-2448L vs E5-2620. This is a real question for me.
Assumption, this is for home lab , not for business .

I checked Ebay sold listing, there were two retail / oem version of E5-2620 sold $250 and $275 each.
I understand E5-2620 is 6 core vs E5-2448L is 8 core.
My experience is that E5-26xx is faster than E5-24xx clock for clock, may make up for the performance difference.

E5-2620 system cost:
Tyan dual LGA2011 board ( purchased 2 board at $100 each, 1 board with LSI at $140 each): $140
2 x E5-2620: $275 x 2 = $550
Total = $690 or $650
With 1 single E5-2620 total cost = $410 or $375

E5-2448L UP system cost:
Intel S1400Fp2 UP board: $150
E5-2448l: $280 x 1 = $280
Total = $430

E5-2448L DP system cost:
Intel DP board: $190
E5-2448l: $280 x 1 = $560
Total = $750

With similar price, I prefer LGA2011 board over LGA1356.

Marsh, good Points, also looked at similar idea, especially as the 2600 series has more PCIe lanes ( something I didnt understand so well when I purchased first LGA 1356 boards quite some time ago. ) there is a synergy with 1356 boards for heatsinks and memory to 1366 boards. Been watching 2620 and 2630 chips, but couldn't find them that cheap, as am looking for one for UP board, looks like I need to work harder and setup a daily search.. Thanks for the info on the 2620.

My ebay search for board is "LGA2011 board", key is sort by price and only look at Buy It Now listing. Takes couple of seconds.

It's true that LGA2011 is better in every area but the price for is much more in a four node configuration. For a home lab, LGA1356 is much better.

I mentioned in the other LGA2011 thread, there is a lot of more cheap board and CPU lately.

In the month of Sept.
I picked up 2 Tyan Dual lga2011 cpu board at $100 each, 1 Tyan dual cpu with LSI controller @140, ASUS P9X79 with E5-26xx ES CPU at $60 with free shipping. Multiple low end cpu E5-26xx at $110 - $140 each.

LGA1356 platform make sense when one find cheap price CPU.

Doh, my board arrived......

Doesn't look good.

Board was new in box..... box not cracked open......but

I can see even without opening the anti-static bag that the serial port is bent upwards....:(

Not sure what to do..... As I had this forwarded to me here in Australia......to return it and get another sent will negate any cheapness I originally got it for.

Whats Intel's international warranty like?

is it worth trying to RMA it over here?

serial port doesnt worry me, it's what has it done to the board / chips around the socket thats the unknown...... don't know much about that sort of stuff myself. so Really can't tell / have no idea if it's going to be an issue .... hence why I haven't even opened the bag yet. (more chance for them to see it's brand new etc)

I'd open the bag. New + banged up serial is not too much different than used + banged up serial.

Warranty is going to be tough due to physical damage like that.

Looks like that is to add a dedicated port for ipmi, also looks like you could just get one of the rmm4lite modules for each board and use the integrated ports on the board from what I am seeing in the documents on Intels site
