Sorry to re-open this but did anyone ever run the tests against these and have any results? I am thinking about taking a Norco 4224 Chassis and convert it into a SAS Drive Bay Unit and Link off of my S6500 with SL390s board and a card like a LSI/Avago 9300-8e wondering if anything came of this...

Thanks!

@Jeggs101 Would you plz provide more info that was your setup? is there any reason you do not do it anymore? just wanted to get a feel of what might be needed to complete this task, is this unit an expander or do i need another one to make this work or can i just hook the 9300-8e to it via cables (converted of course) and let her rip?

Did you see any bandwidth constraints on the implementation?

Thinking about doing a Norco 4224 with this in it connected to the 24 bay setup then force power on the unit at all times to keep the drives spinning then cable it to the S6500 Chassis with teh SL390S and the 9300-8e card in it and doing ZFS (OmniOS) (could be some ssd in there as well) but that can be moved around if needed....

Yes. In a SuperMicro SC216 chassis (24x 2.5") behind an LSI9300-8i. Dual-linked, with the 9th port running off to an SC 846EL1 JBOD full of spinners. So total of 48 drives, half SSD, half spinny, with a cascaded SAS3->SAS2 expander. Fat dumb and happy.

@PigLover - Got any pics of the setup/implementation?

I was thinking of using the 8e version of the 93xx cards instead of the 8i to allow it for separation from the blade chassis... Just wanted to see how all this fun was put together cause i think this could be very sweet if i could consolidate all down to 8U with IPoIB as a network backend for esxi...

@Patrick - I Gotta get your paycheck :p

Can anyone confirm this card is working with 3.5 inch drive ? I want to use it for 8 tb drives but the manual seems to suggest user to use it with 2.5 inch drive.. which kinda concerns me because i will need to import this... thanks
