Would I need one of the above expander to link my Supermicro Motherboard X8DTi-F with HDDs in my 3U Supermicro 16 bays Storage Server Chassis SC836E26-R1200 SAS2-836EL2?

What are your suggestions? I'm thinking of running a raid set up. Thanks in advance.

That chassis already has an expander backplane so you don't need one of these. What you should consider is a RAID card or HBA with 6Gb support to connect to the expander on your chassis.

Thanks Aestr for your feedback. Saves me spending money on stuff I would actually need. Much appreciated. :)

Got one for $80 as well a few days back. Arrived today and installed flawlessly in my norco 4224. I do have one questions though (reading the spec sheet pdf still) but does the PCIe 8x slot pwr this card or did I really need to molex 4 pin pwr the thing as well? I think I got overzealous, any harm in this...assuming not? Two 8 disk ZFS pools came up immediately on my AIO OmniOS/ESXi setup driven by a 9211-8i (DAMN I want a 9300/12Gbps SAS HBA) VM Direct-Path passed to Omni running on vSphere 5.5. Got a Intel DC s3700 drive otw tomorrow to add to the rig that I venture to guess will saturate my poor aging LSI 2008 ctrl. (sad face)

Mine is sitting in the states at a buddies still (I am in Canada) so I cant say, I assumed it would just work off that 4pin molex as I am just using this to turn my Norco 4220 into a jbod chassis.

You power that card EITHER by plugging it into the PCIe slot OR using the Molex. You do not need both - and in some cases using both could be a problem (at the very least you create a loop on the neutral/ground lead and provide the card two different references for ground...single psu so most of the time no worries but any fault in the wiring that creates different resistance between the two paths to ground will cause trouble).

The card gets its power from either the PCIe connector or the Molex connector, and I've used both options without issues. No need to connect both. It allows for quite a lot of flexibility, both in power options as well as cabling options.

I have had instances where I've run out of available PCIe slots (LGA1155/1150 scenarios) and running power to the card over a 24" 4 pin molex extender cable has been the only option.
Also in a dual 2011 senario, where I only had CPU1 populated and had limited PCI-e slots routed to CPU1, I was able to locate the expander in a PCI-e slot allocated to CPU2 leaving all of the CPU1 slots available.

Wow I'm surprised seller is taking these $60-70 offers when their asking price is $160+$30 shipping. Learning something new about Best Offer on eBay :)
