Wow I'm surprised seller is taking these $60-70 offers when their asking price is $160+$30 shipping. Learning something new about Best Offer on eBay :)
I always try to find best offer first than dealing with bid item.

what is your goal?
Current goal is to support my 10 drive MDADM array, I'm 2 ports short with the 5805 controller so I'm trying to figure out most cost efficient way to add those ports but with some futureproofing in mind.
I think additional HBA might be best option in my case as it gives more flexibility and I'll probably upgrade drive size before I increase drive count again for space/power efficiency.

5805 is nasty, the card can not configure drives as JBOD...
get HBA card and you will be happy.
on my opnion
expander is still the good solution, since you can use dual links by assuming on HDD not SSD....
6 ports on expander, 2 ports connect to HBA, 4 ports available that supports 24 HDD's

I was thinking more HBA is better, but with limited PCi-e lane and simplicity to add more drives, expander is on my top list.

actually down sizing from 16 drives to 8 drives + hot spare ...
move old HDDs to another reborn server (backup server now) with total 12 HDD's.

I ditch out hardware RAID as now, just one exception: Hardware RAID on baremetal.

Interesting, my $60 offer for one was countered for $90 instead of $100. Still pretty low compared to others on eBay right now though

Question for folks who's received this:

1) Can you power it beside the PCI-E 8x slot? I don't see a mole plug
2) Can you read all SMART flags for health monitoring on the attached drives?

1) The plug is the white rectangle you see above the heat sink in the photo but it's hard to make it out at that angle
2) Yes it passes through SMART info.

hi canta!

I have this Expander, still testing with it though. 2 questions about your post:

1) are you sure you can connect 2 x sff8087 from HBA to this expander? ( i think its can only do 1 link from HBA, i didn't see any mention of 2x in the manual, ive been testing with 1 x from my 9271 to the RES2SV240)

2) how are you then connecting 24 drives from the remaining 4 x sff8087 ports? ( 4 x 4 = 16? ) dual links?

btw, i got mine for 140 shipped from ebay about 2 weeks ago... at that time there were NO cheaper options on this expander and i actually got a good deal compared to the 170$+ i was seeing on the sold listing search (again 2-3 weeks ago) ... so all of you guys are getting a GREAT DEAL at under 100$ !!!

thanks

1.) Can be dual-linked (link aggregated) with RAID/HBA's and additional expanders for increased throughput
2.) you don't connect 24 drives at all. The description is a bit misleading I think.
If you decide to dual link the res2v240 to your HBA you have 4 ports left => you can connect 16 drives.
If you decide for using just 1 link you have the possibility to connect 20 drives.
I just realized that of you only single link from a 8 port card, you get 5x4 ports on expander and another 1x4 left on controller so 24 total :)

If you are using SATA drives, I don't know if dual-linking the cards helps at all. SATA can only use a single channel as far as I remember. If you view the card in the MSM software, I think if you have dual links it only shows one up. I will have to check my systems again to be sure.
