I haven't felt the need to update firmware, as everything works fine on all my Optane. That might be the only thing that could be harder if you have a "branded" version. But, for Optane, I don't know if Dell, HP, etc., use different firmware.

I think part of the issue is adding multiple connectors and a cable into the mix gets to the point where the signal isn't very good for PCI4 and 5 speeds. There were reports in the past of people getting CRC errors even if the drives were working. There is an old thread here I started where I began with an m.2 to u.2 and believe I couldn't get it to work with my PCIe4 drive and eventually went to what I first suggested above.

Being able to update the firmware will just be a nice finishing touch in my having everything runnnig latest version of everything OCD. It's not like it wouldn't work at all.
I doubt firmwares ever fix major problems with hardware anyway, or rather that major problems are fixable by firmware.
That's a stock photo, and doesn't indicate anything about what you'd get. It's exactly the same as from what I bought January of 2025 (when they were $135 each with free shipping from China).
The serial numbers were different on all the listings I checked so I figured the photos were real even if off very little value. Anyway, there is Ebay's buyer protection so I think I'm safe. I also choose such sellers that have feedback in the amount of at least few hundreds, which I feel like indicate they are legit.
If you got a 375GB Optane in the U.2 form factor, I'm pretty sure that you wouldn't be able to return it because of an HP/Dell/Intel label that was different from the picture.
Again, I have had no problems at all with any Optane, regardless of branding, but if you want a specific branding, you would probably need to buy from somewhere other than China.
You're very much mistaken about the impact of firmwares.
Surely the manufacturers know about the opportunity to fix problems later with updates, and this probably made the quality control worse too.
One of the first major incidents was the 40,000-hour bug on some enterprise SSD's. Or not long ago the MOS-FET issue for Intel/Solidigm S4x20/P5316/P5x00/P5510/P5x20 series drives.

1) Is it normal for these Optane drives to not show any reads/writes in SMART? Actually, it seems to report hardly anything. That doesn't seem right. Do I need a driver or something?

Also, I was worried about cooling, and the drive only got to 50°C in a case with zero airflow after writing close to 400GB. Basically doing HD Tune Pro write test.
yeah you're fine, my 5800x is sitting in a 3.5" slot in my case no issues yet
