what are the specs? is the backplane direct attached or expander chip? 6Gbps? 12Gbps? what is max ram capacity? ram spec? is it upgradable to E5-2600 v2 CPUs?

Looks like a 6gbps intel expander (RES2CV360?) between the fan wall and the backplane. Intel servers seem to use direct connect backplanes and an expander close by with a ton of super short cables. So for this one you could use the expander or run cables direct to an HBA if you wanted.

The motherboard looks like an S2600GZ from the part number. An Intel datasheet suggests it supports V2, but doesn't mention what if any firmware is required so YMMV. Link to the motherboard and it's details below.

I run this same board, but in an 8bay LFF Intel chassis. It's a fantastic base for a super quiet home server.
The board has 24 dimm slots, so plenty of ram capability. I run mine in a open rack in my living room and guests never know its powered on. I run dual 2650v2, 64gb ram, 512gb NVME, 4x3tb 7200 sata, 2x512gb ssd off the motherboard, add in 10gb card just list this server and it runs right at 107w in use over the last 6months.

You will not be disappointed in choosing this as your homelab server. I am quite tempted to pick it up myself. I always wanted the 24x2.5" chassis, but could never find one at a reasonable price.

Not much of a gamer any more and now I have 4 video cards that absolutely destroy the stuff I used to use.

EDIT: This was supposed to be a response to the "needing a hole in the head" comment. :)
