Keeping a bit of a live blog but only have 2x 2GB 1333MHz ECC SODIMMs (that work) at this point.

Windows Benchmarks

Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (x64) Configuration

  • Supermicro A1SAi-2750F with Intel C2750 Avoton 8C/ 8T SOC
  • OCZ Vertex 4 256GB SSD
  • 2x 2GB 1333MHz 1.5v Hynix DIMMs


Windows 7 Benchmarks

  • Cinebench 11.5 - 3.77 (for reference an i3-3220 was 3.35 and and X3440 was 4.57)
  • 7-zip total rating - 13509 MIPS
  • TrueCrypt AES - 2.0 GB/s
  • Linpack (LinX) 10,000 problem size - 18.2468GFlops

Great results so far. One major tip is that although we see a Marvell quad Ethernet solution listed, the drivers used for the Supermicro A1SAi-2750F are Intel branded.

Linux Benchmarks

Ubuntu 13.04 (x64) Configuration

  • Supermicro A1SAi-2750F with Intel C2750 Avoton 8C/ 8T SOC
  • OCZ Vertex 4 256GB SSD
  • 4x 8GB 1600MHz 1.35v Kingston KVR16LSE11/8 DIMMs


Linux Benchmarks

  • c-ray 1.1 simple: 5 seconds
  • c-ray 1.1 complex: 86 seconds
  • UnixBench 5.1.3 single: 576.6
  • UnixBench 5.1.3 multi: 4439.3
  • Hardinfo Blowfish: 2.04
  • Hardinfo Cryptohash: 466.85
  • Hardinfo Fibonacci: 4.44
  • Hardinfo N-Queens: 1.05
  • Hardinfo FPU FFT: 3.74
  • Hardinfo FPU Raytracing: 12.92

The interesting note here is that we see lower idle power consumption with the 4x 8GB lower voltage DIMMs than we did with the 2x 2GB higher voltage parts.

Ever see how much an add in single or dual port controller takes? Like cactus's comment says - you have additional components plus some power supply loss. Even at 5% that adds 1-1.5w.

Let me ask a question - how is it being cooled? Fans add power consumption.

Updated with a 32GB of 1.35v PC3L 1600MHz DIMMs and working on Linux results.

Another note, the test units DO have a small fan on the Avoton heatsink.

What do the nics show up as in linux? These things would make nice routers etc but its all about the drivers especially in BSD

Also can you post a lspci -vvv or whatever?

If you run windoze again, try out hwinfo64 and grab a list of the buses expanded + anything else interesting

  • UnixBench 5.1.3 single: 94.3
  • UnixBench 5.1.3 multi: 216.1

Also L5520 (single):

  • UnixBench 5.1.3 single: 820.2
  • UnixBench 5.1.3 multi: 3928.9

Holy CRAP! 10% faster than the L5520 in the multi-threaded bench? At 20W SoC/33W total system power? Much better than I expected...

With 16 lanes of PCIe, it would be interesting if they had a DTX board with 2x PCIe 8x. 4x GbE, 40Gbps IB and 8x SAS6Gbps all in one box with the processing power of a L5520.

Network has been a total PITA. Ubuntu doesn't want to install drivers and am still awaiting Supermicro support to get back to me with what I should use (and how to get it on there). I have the package in CentOS now, but without the development tools installed, I cannot do "make install" on the igb driver package... of course to get that package I can't use yum since I don't have network access.. what a cycle! Using an external adapter now.

Also - PL there are some where it does a bit better than the L5520, but the single threaded benchmarks all favor the L5520 architecture.

What the... wow batman! Better than I'd expected by a big margin.

I was hoping total system power would be 20w but I guess it'll be next generation.

I completely understand the single-threaded benchmarks being slower. And it really shouldn't be too surprising that it can do better in the multi-threaded tests (with 8 cores vs L5520s 4). But with the triple-channel memory bus, more cache and generally more advanced features I still would have expected the L5520 to just crush Avoton even in the multi-threaded cases.

And the power advantage to get there - 5x or better on total system power - it really is amazing.

Two updates: Network - I used the daily saucy-server-amd64.iso and the installer shows four Intel i354 adapters!

I also added hardinfo output.

Also - PL remember this is dual channel 1600MHz with a newer memory controller architecture vs. triple channel 1333MHz.

100% agree though - this is amazing.

I still want to know pricing! At $600 all you need to be able to do is stick 3 of these in a 1U chassis and you'd absolutely crush anyone running a 1A at 110V Haswell E3 system in terms of output.

The 4 cores have even lower power. Heck a Rangeley 4 core acting as a pfsense router for 2 Avoton 8 cores in a little box you would have a great web hosting solution. $50 to host a firewall appliance and two nodes networked with GbE. The quad port server adapters are a great add since you basically get enough for a cluster in a box right there.

Hey --- if you have 2 of these suckers, can you test 2.5 gigabit Ethernet?

I think $600 is going to end up high.

I agree on that cluster idea but 1U is expensive to cool since you have small fans.

The E3 and Avoton numbers seem to be half of what I would expect. Makes me a bit bummed that I standardized on the pts benchmark.
